Job summary

The Nature Conservancy in South Carolina seeks a Burn Crew Manager to lead prescribed fire operations across mountainous Upstate forests, with occasional work in the Midlands and Coastal Plain.

You will supervise three seasonal technicians, coordinate with state fire staff, and handle administrative duties while advancing fire skills. The role starts Jan 6, 2027 and ends May 28, 2027 (negotiable); housing is provided in Greenville, SC.

Qualifications

• Qualified Fire Fighter Type 1 (Squad Boss) and FFT1 task book requirements.
• Ability to achieve NWCG arduous wildland firefighter rating by carrying a 45lb pack 3 miles in under 45 minutes.
• Experience supervising staff or volunteers is required.
• Experience operating and maintaining various equipment (4WD, engines, ATVs, chainsaws, drip torch).
• Willingness to travel extensively and work weekends with flexible schedule.
• Ability to perform physical work in inclement weather.
• Must provide lace-up leather boots, 8 inch minimum height.
• Must have a valid driver's license and good driving record.

Responsibilities

• Lead the burn crew and monitor progress toward fire management goals.
• Oversee time and expense tracking, equipment repair, and supply purchasing.
• Serve as a key decision maker on the fire line based on fire behavior and resources.
• Keep abreast of new burn techniques and equipment to maintain/expand credentials.
• Assist on wildland fire operations with partners or travel to other areas as needed.
• Build and maintain relationships in the professional fire community and local area.
