Job summary

City of Alexandria seeks a Principal Planner for Plan Implementation to lead the execution of the City’s Comprehensive Plan and related initiatives. You will coordinate across departments and external partners, translating strategic plans into executable projects with measurable outcomes.

The role requires extensive long-range planning experience, strong supervision, and excellent communication skills, including public speaking, to advance economic development and redevelopment efforts.

Qualifications

• Four-year college degree; five years urban planning experience.
• Master’s degree in urban planning preferred; AICP helpful.
• Experience leading large urban projects and plan implementation.
• Supervisory experience; ability to coordinate across departments.
• Strong communication and public speaking skills.

Responsibilities

• Leads and coordinates implementation of adopted plans and initiatives.
• Develops implementation strategies, timelines, and coordination mechanisms.
• Identifies funding sources and regulatory considerations for plans.
• Tracks progress and prepares status updates and performance measures.
• Supports redevelopment and economic development through partnerships.
• Supervises urban planners; performs other related duties.
