Job summary

City of Alexandria, VA, invites applications for a Principal Planner to lead the Public Facilities Development Team within the Department of Planning & Zoning. The role oversees regulatory review of public facilities and development plans from concept through construction.

The Principal Planner will supervise planners, manage a multidisciplinary team, present recommendations to City Council and Planning Commission, and drive major infrastructure projects in the Potomac Yard area, including

Qualifications

• Four-year college degree in planning, urban design, or related field.
• Master’s degree in urban planning, public administration, engineering, geography, or related field; AICP or equivalent preferred.

Responsibilities

• Manage the workflow of the assigned team.
• Guide staff in reviewing public and private development projects and in preparing studies and policy initiatives.
• Support development review processes and streamline workflows (One Start).
• Contribute to CIP implementation and interdepartmental collaboration.
• Review and edit detailed staff reports for development projects.
• Lead interdepartmental development review of complex multi-disciplinary cases.
• Oversee contract management for special projects and deliverables.
• Prepare and edit graphics for presentations and printed materials.
• Present to Planning Commission, City Council and other boards; communicate with senior management.
