THOM Thomas Hospitals in West Virginia is seeking a phlebotomy technician to coordinate workflow, collect blood and non-blood specimens, and ensure accurate labeling and timely processing.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Phlebotomy Certification (CPT) preferred.
  • Two years of phlebotomy experience.

Responsibilities

  • Draw blood and other specimen collection from diverse patient groups.
  • Label specimens accurately in the presence of patients.
  • Operate basic lab equipment such as centrifuges and labeling printers.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, clients, and staff.
  • Perform clerical duties like filing and report distribution.
  • Assist with scheduling and daily operations of the phlebotomy department.
  • Monitor supplies and support routine investigations into collection issues.
  • Provide training to new Phlebotomy Techs and assist with annual evaluations.
  • Oversee department operations in the Supervisor/Manager's absence.

Job description

Coordinate daily workflow, scheduling, and training of assigned staff and review work to ensure completeness and consistency. Responsible for blood and blood culture collection; non-blood specimen collection including urine, sputum, semen samples, throat swabs; chain of custody specimen collection. Perform venipunctures and skin punctures competently and expediently.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Two (2) years of phlebotomy experience.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Consistently draws blood competently and expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible for patient groups from neonates to geriatrics.

  2. Properly labels all specimens in the presence of the patient.

  3. Operate basic laboratory equipment (e.g., centrifuges, computer systems, labeling printers, scanners, phone system, etc.).

  4. Communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, clients, and staff.

  5. Perform clerical duties such as filing, report distribution, processing, and faxing.

  6. If applicable, collect drug screens (internal and external) using Chain of Custody Process.

  7. Assist Supervisor/Manager with day-to-day operations of the phlebotomy department.

  8. Assist with the monthly scheduling of the phlebotomy staff and assign coverage for vacations and call-offs.

  9. Monitor supply level and sub supply requisitions as needed to maintain optimal level of supplies.

  10. Assist with customer complaints and help with investigations into issues in the collection of specimens.

  11. Assist Supervisor/Manager with monitoring and evaluating productivity reports, unreceived specimen list, and work queues.

  12. Assist with the orientation of all lab staff into the laboratory.

  13. Provide training New Phlebotomy Techs.

  14. Assist with annual competencies and evaluations of staff.

  15. Oversee the operations of the phlebotomy department in the absence of the Supervisor/Manager.
