Responsibilities

  • Performs quality control of patient orders and records for completeness
  • Prepares specimens for transportation with accurate labeling and patient matching
  • Data entry, filing, faxing, stocking supplies, and processing various specimens (blood, urine, stool, sputum)
  • Ability to process insurance/payment information
  • Maintain Chain of Custody certification with up-to-date training
  • Review invoices from reference laboratories for accuracy
  • Prepare invoices for clients
  • Maintain daily, weekly, and monthly reports
  • Retrieve results from reference lab portals and provide results to ordering providers
  • Prioritize tasks and manage time without compromising quality
  • Assist Director of Laboratory Services with tasks and projects
  • All other duties as assigned

Job description

The Lead Phlebotomist is an instrumental first point of service contact for patients, vendors and visitors who are provided services within the Laboratory Department. The colleague provides general support for functions related to their specific tasks and adherence to the rules and regulations of all applicable local, state, and federal agencies and accrediting bodies. The Lead Phlebotomist is also responsible for performing administrative and clerical tasks to support the laboratory’s operational functions, including data entry, maintaining records, filing reports, answering phone inquiries, and assisting with patient specimen collection coordination, all while adhering to established laboratory procedures and safety protocols.

  • Performs quality control of patient orders and records for completeness
  • Prepares specimens for transportation including, but not limited to, labeling vials accurately and matching specimens to patients by matching demographics
  • Filing, data entry, faxing, stocking supplies, collecting urine drug screens, and processing biological specimens of various types including, but not limited to, blood, urine, stool, sputum, and other fluids
  • Ability to process insurance/payment information
  • Maintain a current Chain of Custody certification with uptodate training on 49 CFR Part 40 regulations.
  • Reviews invoices from reference laboratories for accuracy
  • Prepares invoices for clients
  • Maintains and provides daily, weekly, and monthly reports to relevant parties
  • Retrieves results from reference lab portals and provides results to ordering providers
  • Prioritization and time management skills, working quickly without compromising quality of work
  • Assists Director of Laboratory Services with various tasks and projects as needed
  • All other duties as assigned
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 3+ years of Phlebotomy experience in a highvolume setting preferred
  • Current BLS (AHA or AHSI)

  • Demonstrate competencies in appropriate areas
  • Good communication and listening skills
  • Must be able to speak, read and write the English language
