Job summary

City of Alexandria, Virginia, is seeking an experienced Division Chief of Permits and Inspections within the Transportation & Environmental Services (T&ES) department. You will provide high‑level leadership for permit processing, plan review, utility permitting, and right‑of‑way inspections while guiding a diverse team to deliver projects that comply with City codes and standards.

The ideal candidate has a Civil Engineering degree with eight years of engineering experience in the public sector,

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with eight years of progressively responsible engineering experience including civil engineering project management and infrastructure design.
Licensure as a Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Responsibilities

Lead permit processing, plan review, utility permitting, property information, and right‑of‑way inspection functions.
Shape the implementation of complex, citywide development projects and initiatives.
Build partnerships with development community, City departments, and other agencies.
Modernize services by developing new programs and improving processes.
Lead and develop a diverse team of managers, engineers, inspectors, and support staff.
Oversee budget development, financial reconciliation, and fund management.
Represent T&ES and the City with residents, developers, and external partners.
