7am-3:30pm and every third weekend

Responsible for specimen processes, performance, and analysis of laboratory specimens. Demonstrates expertise and responsibility for daily workload. Coordinates the oversight of laboratory inspections for the College of American Pathologists, DNV, OSHA, and State of Iowa accreditation processes. Responsible for implementation, validation, and approval of new equipment, procedures, and instrumentation for the Medical Laboratory Department. Coordinates Safety Officer duties, supplies, and reagent orders with UPH Supply departments and vendors.

Responsibilities

Patient Care:

  • Complete daily workload and patient testing promptly. Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and problems.
  • Use critical thinking to make independent judgments, maintaining responsibility for test conditions and instrument recalls from FDA or vendors.
  • Identify and coordinate preventative and required maintenance for laboratory equipment, ensuring compliance with CAP, DNV, OSHA, and Iowa requirements.
  • Provide ongoing education and procedural updates for staff and students.

Technical Coordination:

  • Maintain documentation to ensure the laboratory is inspection-ready at all times.
  • Review and update department policies and procedures according to vendor instructions.
  • Manage Laboratory Safety Officer duties, including safety checks, SDS updates, and equipment maintenance records.
  • Collaborate with supply departments and vendors to develop organized, cost-effective supply ordering processes.
  • Represent the laboratory on initiatives and committees, such as Value Analysis Teams.

Department Support:

  • Register vendors and service personnel as per policy.
  • Respond to instrument malfunctions or QA issues promptly.
  • Work with the Laboratory IT team to set up, test, and approve testing interfaces.
  • Assist in analyzing testing costs and billing, collaborating with managers and the director.

Qualifications:

  • Baccalaureate degree in medical technology or related science.
  • 3-5 years of experience as a Medical Technologist.
  • Certification as a MT (ASCP) or through the National Certification Agency.
  • Valid driver’s license for work-related travel.
  • Fluent in English, with multicultural sensitivity.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office).
  • Patient-focused with critical thinking skills for independent and collaborative decisions.
  • Ability to operate usual equipment used in the position.
  • Occasional travel to other UPH facilities; may drive a UPH vehicle, rental, or personal vehicle.
