Job description

Summary

This position is located within the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at the VA North Texas Healthcare System in Dallas, TX. The role involves collecting and processing specimens, including computerized accessioning, and ensuring proper storage conditions to preserve specimen integrity if analysis is delayed.

Qualifications

English Language Proficiency Requirement: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), proficiency in basic written and spoken English is required for direct patient care positions.

Selective Placement Factor: Experience performing phlebotomy/blood draws on human patients is essential.

Additional Qualifications: To qualify at the GS-5 level, candidates must meet one of the following:

  • Experience: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-4 in the federal service, involving laboratory support work such as performing tests, preparing reports, or technical support in related fields, including directing workflow and training staff.
  • Education: A bachelor's degree with at least 24 semester hours in relevant subjects like clinical hematology or microbiology, obtained from an accredited institution.
  • Combination: A combination of education and experience meeting the above criteria.

All experience must be documented with job titles, duties, start/end dates, and hours worked weekly.

Physical Requirements

Work is performed in a laboratory setting and involves walking, bending, standing, moderate lifting, and fine motor skills for technical procedures. Repetitive motion and eyestrain may occur during data entry.

Duties
  • Coordinate and perform routine venipuncture specimen collection.
  • Address difficult sticks, troubleshoot samples, and resolve issues with patients or their families.
  • Oversee and distribute workload among at least five medical technicians daily.
  • Maintain optimal patient flow by assigning tasks and managing breaks.
  • Obtain timely blood samples and restock collection areas.
  • Provide customer service for laboratory specimen reception.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on specimen collection and processing.
  • Instruct staff in specific tasks, provide written instructions, and supply reference materials.
  • Verify patient information and test orders in the computer system.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.
