Job description

This position is located in the Health Information Management section at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System. The Lead Medical Records Technician Coder works within a team environment, supporting peers in meeting goals, deadlines, handling multiple tasks with frequently changing projects and deadlines. The role requires skill in classifying medical data from patient health records in hospital and physician-based settings.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements
  • Citizenship: Citizen of the United States.
  • English/Language Proficiency: MRTs (Coder) must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f).
  • Certification: Persons hired or reassigned to MRT (Coder) positions in the GS-0675 series in VHA must have either (1), (2), or (3) below:
  • Apprentice/Associate Level Certification through AHIMA or AAPC.
  • Mastery Level Certification through AHIMA or AAPC.
  • Clinical Documentation Improvement Certification through AHIMA or ACDIS.
  • Experience and Education:
  • Experience: One year of creditable experience indicating knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, medical coding, and health records structure and format, OR
  • Education: An associate's degree in health information technology/management or a related field with relevant coursework, OR
  • Completion of an AHIMA-approved coding program or similar intense training program, leading to certification eligibility, OR
  • Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combinations of experience and education, including military training, are qualifying.

May qualify under the Grandfathering Provision if applicable.

Grade Determinations GS-09

Experience: One year of creditable experience at the journey level. Certification: Must have a mastery level certification. Duties include reviewing coding, guiding staff, preparing reports, analyzing data, coordinating workflow, training staff, and ensuring compliance with coding standards.

  • Advanced knowledge of coding classification systems and research skills.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Training skills for new staff.

Physical Requirements

The work is sedentary, primarily seated at a desk, with some walking and standing for meetings or research. Light objects are carried, and heavy lifting is not normally required.
