Job summary

TYLin’s Rail + Transit team seeks a Principal Mechanical Engineer to lead the design and delivery of HVAC, tunnel ventilation, and vertical transportation systems for major North American transit projects. You will work with multi-disciplinary teams on stations, tunnels, and facilities in the NY area, with growth opportunities beyond New York.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering; Master’s degree preferred.
• 15+ years progressive mechanical engineering experience in rail/transit or complex facility environments.
• Deep expertise in HVAC and tunnel ventilation design for underground environments.
• Experience leading elevator/vertical transportation design for station/facility projects.
• PE license strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design of HVAC, tunnel ventilation, smoke control and building systems for transit stations, tunnels, and rail facilities.
• Serve as a technical authority for vertical transportation systems.
• Manage design packages from concept through final design, including drawings, specifications, and reports.
• Oversee engineering calculations, airflow modeling, system sizing, and performance-based design approaches.
• Ensure compliance with NFPA, ASHRAE, NYC Building Code and transit authority requirements.
• Partner with architects, structural, electrical, fire/life safety, and systems teams for integrated solutions.
• Provide project management leadership including schedules, budgets, and client interface.
• Mentor and develop mechanical staff within Rail + Transit.
• Participate in design reviews, QA/QC processes, and technical decisions.
