I. Summary

Lead Mechanical Engineers with a plumbing and fire protection focus are strong engineers responsible for developing technical deliverables. This position is responsible for the development of utility service system concepts, complete floor plan layouts, isometrics, system calculations and analysis, equipment selection, and equipment and fixture schedules. Responsibilities include assisting with planning, conducting, and evaluating approaches to meet project objectives in a timely, cost-effective fashion.

Core Functions
  1. Perform engineering tasks and work with engineers and designers to produce projects in design.
  2. Review Plumbing and Fire Protection designs per QC/QA standards.
  3. Assist CA representative in reviewing submittals and answering questions from projects in the field.

Plumbing and Fire Protection Engineering
  1. Able to perform basic plumbing and fire protection drafting with minimal direction.
  2. Able to create and print drawings.
  3. Able to draft plumbing and fire protection based on comments and markups.
  4. Able to draft and digitize plumbing and fire protection existing conditions.
  5. Able to draft, digitize, and convert plumbing and fire protection field notes to CAD.
  6. Assist with plumbing and fire protection drawing and document template management.
  7. Understand basic plumbing and fire protection principles used in design.
  8. Able to layout basic domestic water, hot water, waste and vent, storm, natural gas, medical gas, and sprinkler head systems.
  9. Able to use AutoCAD and Revit design software.
  10. Able to edit simple stick-on specifications.
  11. Assist with RFI review and response.
  12. Assist with change order review and response.
  13. Attend Plumbing and Fire Protection department meetings.
  14. Intermediate working knowledge of Plumbing and Fire Protection codes.
  15. Able to follow and work with design checklists.
  16. Able to follow and work with review checklists.
  17. Capable of small scale project designs (<2000 s.f. / less complex design / toilet room and mop sink).
  18. Able to coordinate plumbing and fire protection utilities with municipalities with direction.
  19. Assist with project field visits.
  20. Capable of performing drawing revisions.
  21. Capable of producing drawing sketches.
  22. Capable of performing peer drawing reviews.
  23. Participates in company technical training.
  24. Able to provide pump design layout and connections.
  25. Able to layout basic vacuum waste systems.
  26. Able to layout basic compressed air systems.
  27. Capable of understanding the intricacies of new, existing, and demolition work and how they relate to each other within the design.
  28. Assist with job proposal drafts.
  29. Attend construction meetings.
  30. Edit complex book specifications.
  31. Manage submittal reviews and responses.
  32. Manage RFI reviews and responses.
  33. Review change orders.
  34. Possesses a well-established knowledge of multiple Plumbing and Fire Protection codes.
  35. Able to troubleshoot Plumbing and Fire Protection project challenges.
  36. Lead, motivate, and direct Plumbing and Fire Protection support staff team.
  37. Provide suggestions for possible Plumbing and Fire Protection process improvements.
  38. Plumbing and Fire Protection code research.
  39. Assist with Plumbing and Fire Protection feasibility studies.
  40. Plumbing and Fire Protection project management.
  41. Attend architectural / client / contractor coordination meetings.
  42. Perform field surveys and field visits.
  43. Capable of medium-scale project design (2000 s.f. to 10,000 s.f. / medium complexity / multiple toilet rooms, gas-fired equipment, kitchen, grease, etc.).
  44. Able to perform calculations on domestic water, hot water, waste and vent, grease, storm, natural gas, medical gas, compressed air, pumps, and fire protection systems.
  45. Able to coordinate plumbing and fire protection utilities with municipalities with NO direction or assistance.
  46. Work with product sales representatives to perform design, product review, investigation, and research.
  47. Attend industry meetings and conferences.
  48. Plumbing and fire protection drawings and document template management.
  49. Capable of specification revisions.
  50. Perform internal MEP coordination.
  51. Perform external MEP coordination.
  52. Able to generate plans review comment response letters.
  53. Able to generate plans review comment drawing revisions.
  54. Able to complete permit applications.
  55. Able to compose a design narrative.
  56. Able to create plumbing and fire protection details.
  57. Capable of performing engineer drawing reviews.
  58. Capable of managing supporting engineers and designers project tasks.
  59. Able to create job proposals with little or no assistance.

III. Supervisory Responsibilities

There may be direct supervisory responsibilities associated with this position. Studio directors may assign fire protection and plumbing engineers, designers or co-ops to be under lead engineer’s supervision.

IV. Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s Degree (B.S) from a four-year university or equivalent experience is required.

Professional Engineering license: preferred.

LEED AP: preferred.

Experience: 5+ years working in an MEP engineering consulting firm on multiple building types.

Experience in healthcare preferred.

Communication Skills

Verbal: Convey easily and quickly any message; speaks clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; listens attentively and seeks clarification; maintain professional nonverbal communication analogous to situation.

Written: Writes clearly and informatively with a high level of sophistication; presents numerical data effectively.

Computer Skills

Basic computing skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office programs including MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, and Access. Proficient in AutoCAD and Revit.
