Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to serve as the MI/RR Primary Machine Engineer. This role leads mechanical design, analysis, fabrication, and installation for accelerator components, in collaboration with scientists and stakeholders, onsite at Batavia.

The position requires ABET‑accredited engineering education with 6+ years (or 4+ with a Master’s) and hands-on experience in CAD/FEA, vacuum systems, and project management, with strong leadership

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program with 6+ years of engineering experience, or Master’s with 4+ years.
• Strong ability to communicate with customers/stakeholders and team members.
• Ability to lead a project and installation activities.
• Ability to work under schedules and shifting priorities.
• Perform mechanical stress and deflection calculations.
• Create and read mechanical drawings.
• Knowledge of machine shop practices and fabrication techniques.
• Proficiency with CAD, 3D modeling, 2D drawings, and engineering calculations; project management experience.

Responsibilities

• Serve as Primary Machine Engineer for the MI/RR machines and oversee engineers, drafters, and technicians.
• Plan, implement upgrades and repairs to mechanical systems for the MI/RR accelerators.
• Support future accelerators (PIP-II, LBNF) in design, fabrication, installation, and operation.
• Lead mechanical-system design, stress and thermal analyses, and GD&T practices.
• Plan lifting/rigging of heavy components and manage equipment used for handling.
• Direct co-op students and interns on project tasks.
• Ensure compliance with EH&S policies and regulations.
