Job summary

Roche seeks a hands-on Mechanical Engineer to advance next-generation sequencing hardware in Santa Clara, CA. You will conceive, build, and test electro-mechanical assemblies, ensuring performance, reliability and longevity in a demanding life-science environment.

You will lead sub-system design reviews, verify interfaces, and partner with cross-functional teams to drive trade-offs. Strong CAD, prototyping and manufacturing know-how are essential.

Qualifications

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering with relevant industry experience (minimum 7+ years for a Bachelor's, 4+ years for a Master's, or 3+ years for a PhD).
• Hands-on experience designing, developing, and testing electro-mechanical, pneumatic, thermal, or fluidic assemblies, preferably for life science or diagnostic instrumentation.
• Proficient with SolidWorks for detailed design and manufacturing drawings.
• Experience designing components for machining, sheet metal, injection molding, 3D printing.
• Strong problem-solving; troubleshoot complex hardware, software, and chemistry interfaces.
• Proficient with machine shop tools, measurement equipment, and rapid prototyping (e.g., CNC mills/lathes, laser cutters, 3D printers).
• Experience solving unique or unpredictable problems that impact goals and objectives.

Responsibilities

• Drive the research and development of sub-systems spanning electro-mechanical, pneumatic, thermal, fluidic, and consumable technologies.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and manage critical technical interfaces.
• Own sub-systems through verification, integration, and troubleshooting with System Integration engineers.
• Lead cross-functional design reviews to drive alignment and resolve design trade-offs.
• Manage design deliverable timelines and contribute to overall project planning.
• Create and maintain comprehensive design documentation.
• Contribute to technical strategy with data-driven recommendations on architecture and technology.
• Present progress, data, and design trade-offs to stakeholders with clear engineering impact.
