Job summary

SVEC is seeking an experienced Journeyman Lineman lead to manage overhead and underground transmission and distribution work in the Luray, VA area. You will direct assigned crews, plan tasks, and ensure safety and efficiency across field operations.

Responsibilities include training teammates, coordinating resources, and maintaining equipment, while adhering to SVEC safety policies and performance standards. A Journeyman certificate, CDL-Class A, and strong leadership are required.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Journeyman Lineman certification via an approved Lineman Training Program.
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience as a Journeyman Lineman.
  • Proficiency operating construction/technical equipment.
  • Good working knowledge of RUS construction standards.

Responsibilities

  • Aid and assist in the training of other team members.
  • Responsible for vehicle, tools, and SVEC equipment assigned for use.
  • Direct crews in construction, operation, maintenance and repair of overhead and underground facilities.
  • Assist in organizing and estimating work order labor and material requirements.
  • Assign appropriate crews to jobs and requisition materials and equipment.
  • Plan and document crew activities to use resources safely and efficiently.
  • Recommend improvements to procedures, equipment performance and quality.
  • Perform administrative duties to train, assign work, evaluate performance, and ensure safety compliance.
  • Direct safety and maintenance of materials, trucks, tools and equipment.
  • Assist in special projects as necessary.

Reporting

  • Directs: First and Second Class Lineman
Responsibilities
  • Aid and assist in the training of other team members.
  • Responsible for vehicle, tools, and other SVEC equipment assigned for his/her use.
  • Direct assigned crews in and perform the construction, operation, maintenance and repair of energized and de-energized overhead and underground transmission and distribution facilities.
  • Assist Operations Supervisor in organizing and estimating work order labor and material requirements.
  • Assist Operations Supervisor in assigning appropriate crews to job and requisitioning materials and equipment.
  • Plan, organize, and document with the Operations Supervisor crew activities to utilize resources safely, effectively and efficiently.
  • Recommend to Operations Supervisor ways in which to improve construction procedures, equipment performance and quality of work.
  • Perform administrative functions with employees to provide training and development, work assignments, performance appraisals, discipline and compliance with VOSHA safety rules, SVEC safety and employment practices and policies, while promoting positive work relationships and employee morale in all work crews.
  • Direct assigned crew in the safe use, care and maintenance of materials, trucks, tools and equipment assigned to crews.
  • Assist in special projects as necessary.
Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Documentation of completion of an approved Lineman Training Program that certifies the employee as a Journeyman Lineman.
  • Minimum of 4 years ‘experience as a Journeyman Lineman.
  • Must be proficient in the operation of all construction/technical equipment.
  • Must have a good working knowledge of RUS construction standards.
Required Skills and Abilities
  • Must be able to maintain professionalism and control under all circumstances.
  • Has and maintains a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record and is able to operate SVEC vehicles.
  • Must become and remain certified in CPR and first aid. Must also be skilled in the use of safety equipment.
  • Ability to handle the challenge of operating efficiently under a very flexible schedule due to the number of unanticipated and unplanned requests for services from the various individuals, departments and outside contacts with whom this position is involved.
  • Leadership ability and the ability to motivate peers toward goal achievement.
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to perform job responsibilities in a timely manner within established guidelines under minimal supervision.
  • Must be of high integrity and possess good working habits.
  • Be able to communicate effectively with fellow associates, general public, and especially member-owners, during and after hours as first responder.
  • Must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s license, Class A.
  • Must obtain and hold forklift and flagman certification.
  • Must participate in SVEC’s scheduled On-Call program.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation to and from work.
Physical Requirements
  • Participation in SVEC job safety and training programs, relevant workshops, seminars and other SVEC sponsored courses and events.
  • Must be able to use office equipment including telephone, computer, and other systems and related software in the performance of position responsibilities.
  • Must be able and available, during any and all types of weather conditions, to work weekends, holidays, evenings and other times outside normal duty hours to assist in service restoration and other emergencies that may arise or when the workload demands.
  • Must always maintain an operating telephone or personal communication device at his/her place of residence. Ability to contact the telephone or personal communication device must be made available to SVEC for the purpose of contacting the manager to conduct legitimate routine and/or emergency business.
  • This position involves primarily outside work and may require occasional lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing 130 pounds or more, and routine lifting of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • This position also requires routine walking, standing, some pulling, pushing, stooping, kneeling, climbing of poles and structures, and exposure to dirt and water, under all weather conditions.
  • Residency requirement: Must make his/her residence within forty (40) minutes legal driving time to the district office where he/she is assigned. This is an employment requirement that must be adhered to within 6 months of hire or transfer. In the event this is not complied with his/her employment with the Cooperative will be terminated without notice.
Pay Range

$45.11-60.34 per hour
Actual compensation within this range will be based on the applicant’s experience, education, relevant skills, and field knowledge. Final placement will be determined through an evaluation of these qualifications.
