Job summary

CRAIG-BOTETOURT ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE is seeking a Line Foreman to interpret prints, supervise crews, and perform both energized and de-energized overhead and underground work. You will enforce safety, manage equipment, and train apprentices while maintaining compliance with company policies and SWPM.

The role requires strong leadership, reliability for call-outs, valid Virginia CDL (Class A or B), and the ability to perform physically demanding tasks such as climbing and lifting heavy loads.

Qualifications

  • Requires ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematics.
  • Demonstrated leadership and ability to communicate effectively with public and co-workers.
  • Must be able to plan and organize delegated work with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret prints and complete construction and maintenance assignments on overhead and underground systems.
  • Supervise one or more crews and equipment to execute work as planned by Field Services Supervisor.
  • Enforce safety rules for crew and public; use traffic warning devices as required and report accidents.
  • Perform Hot Line work on energized lines following prescribed methods and procedures.
  • Train Apprentice Lineman through on-the-job observations and evaluations.
  • Maintain vehicle and tools; conduct daily equipment inspections and report needed repairs.
  • Patrol lines and report conditions requiring attention to supervisor.
  • Keep informed of changes to specs to ensure compliance.
  • Use two-way radio in accordance with regulations.

Overview

CRAIG-BOTETOURT ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE POSITION DESCRIPTION LINE FOREMAN

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for interpreting prints and completing all types of construction and maintenance assignments, on both de-energized and energized overhead and underground systems; charging and returning all materials, using proper work order procedures.
  • Has full and complete line authority to carry out the responsibilities assigned to this position.
  • Makes all decisions necessary within the limits of the Coop policies, procedures, and Safe Work Practice Manual (SWPM).
  • Effectively manages one or more crews and various equipment available to get work done as planned by the Supervisor of Field Services.
  • Responsibly enforces safety rules for the protection of assigned crew and public; also, responsible for crew obeying all safety rules and regulations, practices and other Coop rules and regulations and assures proper use of traffic warning devices when working on or near highways; also, responsible for reporting all accidents to supervisor.
  • Performs and observes all “Hot Line” work on lines and voltages of the Cooperative, following prescribed methods and procedures.
  • Watches performance of crewmembers to see that sound work procedures and safety practices are used.
  • Helps in the development and training of the Apprentice Lineman; this includes, but is not limited to: on the job observations, quizzing or testing, and filling out evaluation forms.
  • Responsible for assigned vehicle, equipment and tools to be kept clean and in good working condition, seeing that minor repairs are made and reports to supervisor any parts or major repairs needed; also responsible for daily inspection of assigned automotive equipment and the completion of mileage and/or safety reports, as required.
  • Patrols lines while traveling throughout Co-op service area and makes repairs as needed; also reports conditions that cannot be corrected by the crew.
  • Keeps informed of all operational and construction specification changes, to insure that all work is completed according to requirements; performs necessary clerical work incidental to the job.
  • Uses two-way radio in accordance with Co-op and FCC regulations.
  • In addition, duties of equal or lesser skill may be assigned by the Supervisor of Field Services, or assigned supervisor, to meet emergencies or other operating needs.
Qualifications
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • This job requires reading, writing and mathematics.
  • Must have three years of experience as a Journeyman Lineman, or two years as a Chief Lineman/first class lineman or equivalent experience in a related classification, being knowledgeable of the substations and distribution systems and switching procedures.
Additional Expectations
  • Must have demonstrated leadership capabilities and be able to communicate effectively with the public and co-workers.
  • Must have demonstrated the ability and skill to plan and organize delegated work, with a minimum of supervision.
  • Must have legible handwriting.
  • Must hold a valid Virginia Commercial Drivers License, Class A or Class B, and a current Department of Transportation, Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
  • Must be available for call outs and willing to work extra and irregular hours.
  • Must have the physical ability to perform the essential functions, duties and responsibilities of the job, which include, but are not limited to, climbing poles and structures, bending, pulling, digging, lifting and carrying loads averaging 80 pounds.
  • Must comply with all General Job Requirements.
Working Conditions
  • Working hours will be scheduled Monday-Friday between the hours of 6:30 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.
  • Required to work indoors and outdoors with exposure to heat and cold.
  • Employee shall not be required to work outdoors in rainy or other inclement weather, except when the Cooperative finds it necessary due to an emergency.
