Job summary

Milton Keynes City Council is seeking an Lead Library Assistant to deliver excellent frontline support and help run the library’s daily operations. You will assist with story times, reading promotions and supervise junior colleagues and volunteers to maintain top-quality customer care.

The role is site-based with occasional lone-working responsibilities and requires a full UK driving licence and vehicle access.

Qualifications

• Frontline customer service experience with a focus on inclusivity and high service standards.
• Numeracy and literacy skills aligned to everyday library operations.
• Experience training or supervising junior staff or volunteers.
• Clear, friendly communication with a diverse public.
• Willingness to adapt to changing priorities and locations as needed.

Responsibilities

• Promote and celebrate reading, helping people develop literacy skills and access information.
• Provide friendly frontline support at library service points and assist with story times and promotions.
• Manage day-to-day library operations and act as lone worker when required.
• Support training and supervision of junior staff and volunteers, ensuring high service standards.
• Complete administrative tasks and regular banking procedures securely.
• Maintain a safe environment for colleagues and customers.
