Job summary

Charles Schwab seeks a Lead Java Engineer to steer cross-team Java initiatives, design scalable cloud-based solutions and drive high-quality software in a dynamic banking tech environment.

You will mentor engineers, coordinate with Product Management, Architects, and SRE teams while delivering reliable production systems and contributing to platform modernization efforts. This role emphasizes collaboration, architecture, and customer-focused delivery.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in IT/CS or related field or equivalent practical experience.
• 10+ years of actively developing large scale software using Java, Spring, cloud development, and web services.
• 6+ years with containers and microservices in the cloud.
• 6+ years cloud deployment with CI/CD.
• 2+ years with PCF, GCP, or AWS.
• 2+ years working with PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Aerospike, SQL Server.
• Experience in IT transformations and modernizing legacy to distributed platforms.
• Strong collaboration with Product Management, Architects, SRE and offsite teams.

The Banking Technology organization provides a strategy and technology partnership to Charles Schwab Bank. Our strategy and technology partnership ensures the delivery of a best-in-class set of applications selected and designed to support key banking production and services for our clients. The application portfolio is a combination of SaaS and in-house developed applications. Our technology is a key foundation for internal system integration, front-end development, regulatory, and reporting capabilities. This position will be responsible for delivering high quality solutions that meet business objectives in a flexible, collaborative, and rapidly changing delivery environment.

We are currently in the process of designing the next iteration of our platform to support current and future business capabilities that will delight our customers with a target of starting core development early next year. It’s an exciting time to join this team and be involved in building the next chapter of our platform that is crucial for the firm.

As a Lead Java Engineer you will be the technical lead on cross-team strategic Java engineering efforts to influence decision and alignment while understanding several teams' testing strategies and using knowledge to educate and participate in strategic planning discussions with technical, business, and various stakeholders. You will design effective solutions that are in line with the organization’s vision and actively participate in product design and development sessions to understand the needs of the business, conduct research on potential options and recommend optimal solution based on context. You will also design effective solutions that are in line with the organization’s vision while supporting teams on critical production issues and providing coaching, mentorship, and career development.

What you have

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, related degree, OR related practical experience
• 10+ years of experience in actively developing large scale software using: Java, Spring framework, cloud development, and Web Services supporting high volume transactions in a highly available environment.
• 6+ years of experience working with containers and microservices in the cloud.
• 6+ years of experience in cloud deployment in a continuous integration, and continuous delivery model (CI/CD).
• 2+ years of experience with Pivotal Cloud Foundry (PCF), GCP, or AWS.
• 2+ years’ experience working with databases like ,PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Aerospike, SQL Server.
• Prior experience in IT Transformations and system modernization initiatives from legacy to distributed platforms, i.e., Mainframe Cobol apps/DB2 to Java apps/SQL or MongoDB
• Track record of pursuing and maintaining high quality while delivering on tight schedules
• Collaborative mindset coupled with a bias for action to effectively engage with all areas of the business including Product Management, Architects, SRE, and adjacent teams, etc.
• Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders including offshore teams and manage offshore development activities
• Ability to effectively engage subject matter experts and understand technical topics
• Demonstrated ability to disagree, argue your case with data, and commit to deliver regardless of the outcome of the disagreement
• Demonstrated ability in solution discovery and crafting a design based in engineering principles
• Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills with the demonstrable ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
• Ability to analyze and solve problems creatively
• Track record of mentoring and coaching that results in a stronger organization

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, related degree, OR related practical experience
• Good knowledge of messaging technologies (Kafka, Rabbit MQ, or equivalent)
• Experience in the leading of multiple projects simultaneously
• Experience in working with multiple teams simultaneously
• Experience in collaborating with third-party solutions and providers to deliver high-quality solutions
• Experience in Financial Services industry
• Experience in Test Driven Development, QA Automation and Quality mindset and behaviors
• Proficient in developing Visio diagrams, architectural and design documentations, functional and technical specifications, automated test process
• Willingness to learn all aspects of tech stack and document
• Ability to research and document production and test environments along with architecture and design work
• Knowledge of Agile methodology and experience in an Agile working environment
• Experience with the Atlassian tool stack (JIRA and Confluence)
