Job summary

General Motors seeks an Interior Components Studio Design Engineer to balance interior components with design partners across Architecture, SMT, and Manufacturing. The role works early in vehicle development, integrating innovative tech with design at the systems level.

The position may be filled at Lead Studio Design Engineer or Studio Design Engineer level based on candidate qualifications and experience.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Engineering or other relevant degree.
• 5+ years of experience in a related area (Lead Studio Design Engineer).
• Understanding of engineering theory and automotive design principles.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Ability to integrate complex systems with a strong passion for design.
• Strong analytical skills for solving complex problems.
• Familiarity with manufacturing processes.
• Experience with CAD, including Unigraphics/NX.

Responsibilities

• Create, refine, and finalize engineering criteria with design partners on interior components.
• Lead development of integrated engineering solutions to resolve packaging issues while protecting design aesthetics.
• Use physical and mathematical models to evaluate alternatives and support design decisions.
• Apply DFSS methodologies to manage tradeoffs in cost, mass, timing, assembly, and variation.
• Integrate regional and global requirements to support brand and market needs.
• Communicate proactively with team members to resolve challenges in Expert Team meetings.
• Ensure packaging and studio models align with targets for space, visibility, occupancy and access.
• Lead cross-functional surface and integration meetings (CITs, Surface Workgroups).
• Drive issue resolution for assigned areas of responsibility.
• Support design surfaces in digital models, clay models, and VR/MR mockups.
• Benchmark competitive vehicles for packaging size, clearances, and performance.
• Develop meeting agendas and publish minutes.
• Create NX models to guide surface development and maintain NX modeling skills.
• Incorporate Voice of the Customer into package design.
• Develop space claims and package solutions maximizing space utilization.
• Support Math Virtual Assessments and Synch Point reviews.
