Job summary

Fuse in Albuquerque, NM is seeking a lead Health Physicist to own the on-site radiological protection program for a fusion-energy facility. You will oversee shielding, source terms, dosimetry, surveys, and the decisions that keep operations safe and compliant.

You will verify shielding designs, run transport calculations, develop activation and dose-rate models, calibrate instruments, and author work permits.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree or higher in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Radiological Sciences or a related field.
  • Certification by the American Board of Health Physics (CHP).
  • 5+ years of operational health physics experience in neutron/photon fields, incl. 2+ years with tritium.
  • Proven proficiency with at least one major transport code: MCNP/MCNPX, PHITS, GEANT4 or FLUKA.
  • Working knowledge of 10 CFR 835/20, DOE‑STD‑1098, DOE‑HDBK‑1129, and 20.3 NMAC.
  • Hands-on experience with tritium bioassay programs, internal-dose assessment, and ICRP biokinetic models for HTO.
  • Experience leading activation analysis and defensible safe-to-handle decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Independently verify shielding designs for geometry, source definition, tally choice and uncertainty.
  • Run MCNP/PHITS/GEANT4 transport calculations for fusion generators, target chambers, beamlines, and shielded penetrations.
  • Build and maintain validated source-term models for D-T neutron yield and spectra.
  • Perform activation analysis and generate dose-rate vs. cool-down curves for operations.
  • Specify radiological instrument fleet and match detectors to field characteristics.
  • Calibrate high-end instruments to regulator-reviewed standards.
  • Authorize radiological work permits with credible dose estimates.
  • Lead reviews with physicists and engineers from the start; partner with the RSO.
  • Train operators and engineers on dosimeters and monitors and their limitations.
