Job summary

HWC Engineering is seeking a Survey Crew Chief to lead field surveys for large energy and transportation projects in Indiana. The role emphasizes independent work, remote capability, and strong teamwork within the Survey Department.

The ideal candidate will have 2+ years as Crew Chief/Party Chief or 5+ years as Instrument Operator, with experience in ALTA, boundary, and topographic surveys, using Trimble equipment and AutoCAD. Flexible schedules and travel may be required.

Qualifications

• Experience with Trimble Survey Equipment such as Total Station, GPS, and Controller.
• Ability to work alone and with other employees.
• Valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.
• 2+ years of land surveying experience as a Crew Chief/Party Chief or 5+ years as an Instrument Operator.
• Ability to read construction plans, surveys, and PLSS.
• Ability to perform field calculations and problem solving.
• Ability to lift and carry survey equipment up to 50 lbs.

Responsibilities

• Fieldwork Leadership: lead a surveying crew on ALTA/NSPS, boundary, topographic tasks.
• Data Collection: operate Trimble equipment to record survey data.
• Quality Control: ensure data meets accuracy standards and re-measure if needed.
• Project Planning: help plan schedules considering weather, maintenance, and resources.
• Safety: enforce safety protocols in the field.
• Client Interaction: communicate on-site to address concerns.
• Record Keeping: maintain survey data, notes, and equipment logs.
• Crew Training: guide technicians to improve data collection practices.
• Equipment Maintenance: perform routine maintenance on gear.
