Field Service Technician
The opportunity:
The Field Service Technician provides technical assistance to customers in installing and maintaining Smurfit Westrock packaging machinery. Responsibilities include machine audits, planned maintenance, troubleshooting, and resolution. The role supports customers independently, gathers information, and communicates insights back to Service Management, Engineering, and Sales. The technician may also lead training for less experienced technicians.
How you will impact Smurfit Westrock:
- Provide on-site customer services including installations, preventative maintenance, audits, and troubleshooting.
- Deliver accurate and timely service, reports, and documentation.
- Contribute feedback for continuous improvement.
- Support the installation and commissioning of new machines at customer sites.
General Functions, Skills, and Responsibilities
- Install and service packaging machinery.
- Lead installation and service efforts.
- Support mechanical and electrical aspects of equipment.
- Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues.
- Resolve issues across multiple machinery platforms.
- Sell services and parts based on audits.
- Train less experienced technicians.
- Support machinery production in Atlanta and potentially in Chateauroux, France.
- Follow customer schedules and report daily to the regional service manager.
- Conduct exit interviews and communicate with relevant stakeholders.
- Complete expense reports and adhere to safety rules.
- Maintain professional relationships with colleagues and customers.
- Train operators and mechanics in safe operation, changeovers, and preventive procedures.
- Perform acceptance testing and lead significant machinery events.
- Attend technical training and support sales efforts.
- Manage technical responsibilities for projects, including testing and documentation.
- Coordinate with the factory on product issues.
What you need to succeed:
- A technical degree is a plus but not required.
- Strong problem-solving skills for root cause analysis.
- Experience with industrial controls, field instrumentation, and control systems is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of Ethernet networks, industrial communication protocols, and control tuning is beneficial.
- Previous field service experience is required.
- Good customer relations, communication, and mechanical skills.
- Self-motivated and team-oriented.
- Ability to travel internationally and domestically, including weekends and nights; a passport is required.
- Ability to learn new technologies and follow safety guidelines.
- Capability to interpret electrical and mechanical schematics.
Physical Requirements
- Lift up to 50 lbs, work in various physical positions, and work at heights.
- Work shifts may include nights, weekends, and extended hours.
- Work around electricity and in confined spaces.
Performance Measurements
- Achievement of service objectives, expense management, and quality of work.
- Effective teamwork and timely, accurate documentation.
Training Requirements
- Safety training including hazard communication, PPE, lockout/tagout, and electrical safety.
- Job-specific training on maintenance, quality procedures, and customer specifications.
Work Environment
- Exposure to moving equipment, heat, fumes, and noise.
- Use of personal protective equipment as required.
