Job summary

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Staff Archaeologist – Crew Chief to join our Cultural Resources team in the New Mexico Four Corners region. This field position is based out of Albuquerque, NM, with the possibility of travel within the state or to other states to support fieldwork and client projects.

Responsibilities include leading field crews, directing data collection, overseeing analyses, contributing to reports, and mentoring junior staff while adhering to regulations and safety

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology, Archaeology or a closely related field.
• One year experience with a wide range of field methodologies, including archaeological survey, testing, excavation, and monitoring required; up to two years preferred.
• Experience in New Mexico
• Previous field supervisory experience
• Accredited field school experience
• Current listing, or ability to be listed, on federal and state cultural resource permits in New Mexico (including BLM and NMSLO permits).
• Knowledge of ArcGIS software programs preferred
• Current valid driver’s license and the ability to safely operate a 4wd vehicle on rugged, backcountry roads required
• Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, and often at high altitudes, and the ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required.

Responsibilities

• Serves as field survey crew lead, directing daily work activities and communicating project issues to management.
• Oversees data collection, processing, analysis, and quality control tasks for projects.
• Develops components of project deliverables in collaboration with interdisciplinary team members.
• Communicates task progress and issues to ensure timely resolution.
• Fosters collaboration and shared information to improve project outcomes.
• Performs data collection in the field or through research and data processing/analysis tasks.
• Ensures adherence to policies and professional standards.
• Follows federal, Tribal, state, local, industry, contractual, and company regulations and specifications.
• Performs related work as assigned.
• Serves as a resource and mentor to less experienced field staff with training and feedback.
