Job summary

Fleet Direct Lincoln is seeking a Lead Fabricator for the second shift to maintain diesel equipment, perform inspections, and execute precision welding and fabrication on head racks and trailer assemblies.

You will inspect, diagnose, and repair complex components, oversee external repairs, and ensure safety checks and proper documentation. The role requires strong communication, attention to detail, and readiness for extended hours.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years’ experience in class 8 tractor truck maintenance and/or equivalent schooling.
  • Experience with electronic diagnostics.
  • Peterbilt chassis experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of DOT compliance, laws, rules, regulations and safety is helpful.
  • Knowledge of transportation management system is a plus.
  • Computer literate: Microsoft Excel/Outlook is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Perform inspection, diagnosis and repair of vehicles and equipment including head rack and trailer assemblies.
  • Fabricate and weld head racks and trailers for repairs due to wear, accidents, or rust.
  • Inspect the quality of outside repairs and oversee rebuilds; assess damage and plan repairs.
  • Conduct safety checks on trucks.
  • Maintain shop records and preventive maintenance; communicate with Lead Mechanic/Foreman.
  • Keep shop equipment operating and manage supplies; follow warranty procedures.

What will the Lead Fabricator do?

The Lead Fabricator will support the team during the second shift by maintaining diesel equipment operations, completing inspections and preventive maintenance requirements; correcting vehicle deficiencies; making adjustments and alignments; and keeping records.

What is the Lead Fabricator responsible for?

  • Perform proficient inspection, diagnosis and moderately complex repair of assigned vehicles and equipment to include structural components and non- structural components of head rack and trailer assemblies.
  • Fabricate and welding of head rack and trailers to make repairs from normal wear and tear, accident repairs, driver damage and structural integrity from rust or other outside factors.
  • Inspect the quality of outside/supplier repairs and or rebuilds. Assess structural damage and assign needed repairs utilizing the most appropriate method(s).
  • Conduct safety checks on trucks.
  • Perform maintenance related work as required.
  • Maintains a clear line of communication to the Lead Mechanic/Foreman and other staff in the maintenance department.
  • Keeps shop equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance.
  • Contains costs by using warranty; evaluating service and parts options.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical and regulation publications.
  • Occasionally may perform service calls for emergency breakdowns.
  • Maintain a clean, safe work area in compliance with Corporate/OSHA Standards and perform all work in accordance with established procedures.

What knowledge, skills and abilities are required for the Lead Fabricator role?

  • Class A CDL license is preferred but notrequired.
  • Certified welder is preferred but notrequired.
  • 5+ years’ experience in class 8 tractor truck maintenance and/or equivalent schooling, background of hydraulics a plus.
  • Experience with electronic diagnostics.
  • Experience with Peterbilt chassis a plus.
  • Knowledge of DOT compliance, laws, rules,regulationsand safety is helpful.
  • Knowledge of transportation management system, a plus.
  • Computer literate. Microsoft,Outlookand Excel a plus.
  • Attention to detail andpossessa high levelof accuracy.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and ability to stay calm under pressure.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to develop andmaintainpositive relationships with dispatch team and auto haulers.
  • Excellent communication skills both internally and with customers.
  • Work may require more than40 hoursper week.
