Job summary

Smithsonian Institution in Chantilly, VA seeks a Lead Museum Technician (Lead Explainer) to supervise and train Explainers in interactive STEM demonstrations at two museum locations. This temporary role supports education staff and volunteers while delivering engaging programs to diverse visitors.

The position requires strong leadership, teaching ability, and deep knowledge of physical sciences, with responsibilities including scheduling, training, program updates, and outreach coordination.

Qualifications

• Must have a high school diploma from an accredited institution; a bachelor's degree is preferred.
• Knowledge of education activities related to the Explainers Program (demonstrations, Interactives, Discovery Stations).
• Proven track record in the Explainers Program as reliable, respectful and professional.
• Ability to think clearly, remain calm and take command during stressful situations while facilitating programming in the Museum.
• Ability to lead and train fellow Explainers.
• Proven writing and organizational skills.
• Knowledge of physical sciences and the ability to teach STEM concepts to broad audiences.
• Must be able to perform repetitive tasks and follow instructions.
• Must be 18 years of age and enrolled in a local DC area college or university.

Responsibilities

• Lead Explainers act as floor leaders when Coordinators are off the floor, monitoring and correcting behavior.
• Assist in training and evaluating fellow Explainers learning demonstrations and exhibits.
• Assist with updating educational programs in response to STEM advances.
• Help manage daily operations, schedules, opening/closing procedures, and space maintenance.
• Maintain demonstration integrity by following outlines and advising on best practices.
• Present hands-on demonstrations to the public and engage school groups at two museum locations.
• Assist with general maintenance of program equipment.
• Collect and report audience data for program impact and outreach.
• Attend ongoing training sessions scheduled by program coordinators.
• Familiarity with NASM collections to engage visitors and train staff.
• Attend meetings to provide feedback on program goals and projects.
• Support outreach events, including logistics and setup at partner sites.
