Job summary

Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. seeks a senior electrical engineer to enhance reliability and safe operation of high-voltage distribution equipment, motors, and protection systems across North America. The role involves root-cause analysis, developing engineered solutions, and standardizing guidelines to reduce downtime.

The position is primarily at the Texas City plant with 15–20% travel to other sites, requiring strong safety practices and mentoring of field technicians.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years of electrical engineering experience in large industrial plants.
  • Experience with electrical safety programs and NFPA 70E.
  • Proficiency with SKM PowerTools and protective relays (SEL/Multilin).
  • Experience specifying and supporting HV substations and related equipment.
  • Familiarity with NERC standards and compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support for high-voltage distribution equipment and high-voltage motors/generators.
  • Lead root-cause analyses and drive corrective actions to closure.
  • Supervise vendor repairs and verify workmanship.
  • Develop predictive and preventive maintenance strategies for critical electrical assets.
  • Perform power system studies and relay settings validation.
  • Train and mentor technicians on safe operation and preventive maintenance.

In this role, you’ll improve the reliability and safe operation of high-voltage electrical distribution equipment, rotating machinery, and power system protection across our North America facilities.

You’ll lead fixing and root‑cause efforts, turn analysis into practical maintenance and engineered solutions, and help standardize guidelines that reduce repeat failures and unplanned downtime.

Your primary work location is our Texas City plant, with periodic travel (approximately 15-20%) to support other North America sites as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Provide technical support to field teams for high-voltage distribution equipment and high-voltage motors/generators.
  • Solve electrical equipment issues and coordinate technical response across Air Products facilities.
  • Supervise vendor shop repairs of high-voltage motors and equipment to verify quality and workmanship.
  • Document critical work with repair reports to support traceability and long-term equipment history.
  • Develop engineered solutions to eliminate recurring electrical issues.
  • Improve plant reliability by trending performance data and updating maintenance procedures.
  • Lead and participate in root‑cause analyses (RCA) and drive corrective actions to closure.
  • Develop and complete predictive and preventive maintenance strategies for critical electrical assets.
  • Apply internal and national standards when specifying, maintaining, and repairing electrical equipment.
  • Review and approve engineering documents for plant upgrades and reliability projects.
  • Train, coach, and mentor technicians and operations staff on safe operation and preventive maintenance of electrical systems.
  • Ensure all work aligns with Safety and Environmental standards and supports a strong safety culture.
  • Maintain company electrical safe work practice standards aligned with industry standards and recommended procedures.
  • Perform power system studies, including motor starting/voltage drop, short‑circuit, arc‑flash, and load‑flow analyses.
  • Program protective relays using settings developed from system studies and validate performance through event analysis.
Required Responsibilities
  • Deliver all objectives safely and achieve 100% compliance with Air Products’ safety requirements.
  • Minimum 10 years of electrical engineering experience, including operations and maintenance in large industrial plants.
  • Experience handling an electrical safety program, including detailed knowledge of NFPA 70E.
  • In‑depth experience with SKM PowerTools for Windows engineering software.
  • In‑depth experience with SEL and Multilin protective relays, including programming and event analysis.
  • Experience specifying and supporting HV substations and associated equipment (transformers; HV/LV motors and generators; motor control circuits; VFDs; station batteries; and UPS systems).
  • Experience in the operation and maintenance of synchronous generators and the associated control and protection systems.
  • Experience with NERC standards and compliance for a generating facility.
  • Ability to travel in North America (15‑20%).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Active Texas PE license.
  • Safety training certification such as NFPA CESCP.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs for large complex processes.
  • Working knowledge of industrial process control systems such as PLC's, DCS systems and associated instrumentation.
