Job summary

Personnel Board of Jefferson County seeks a well-qualified Chief Electrical Inspector to direct and participate in inspecting all electrical installations, ensuring compliance with codes and ordinances. This role involves contacting violators, explaining code requirements, and issuing stop-work notices for unsafe work, while overseeing subordinate staff.

The position requires a Master Electrician Certification, Alabama electrical licenses, experience with NEC, and planning/schematic

Qualifications

• Master Electrician Certification from Alabama/Jefferson County (or City of Birmingham).
• State of Alabama Electrical Contractor license.
• Driver's license is required.
• Experience inspecting the work of other electricians.
• Experience using and interpreting the National Electrical Code (NEC) for inspectors, contractors, and/or homeowners.
• Experience interpreting and comprehending engineering and architectural plans.

Responsibilities

• Enforces codes and ordinances by comparing potential violations to applicable codes and ordinances to ensure compliance and safety.
• Researches and reviews codes, ordinances, notices, and permitting by reading code books and amendments and researching new materials to stay current and accurate.
• Conducts electrical inspections by comparing electrical constructions and installations to plan requirements to ensure compliance.
• Conducts general inspection activities for contractors by checking for valid permits, ensuring plans comply with codes, and issuing Certificates of Occupancy.
• Conducts inspections related to life safety, disability accessibility, and natural disasters by following professional inspection protocols.
• Reviews plans by comparing construction details to codes and ordinances to ensure compliance.
• Engages in professional development to upgrade procedures and improve performance.
• Supervises staff by assigning work, directing duties, monitoring progress, and providing training.
