Job summary

Powell Industries is seeking an experienced electrical design engineer with 8–10 years in engineering to design standard jobs and develop BOMs for switchgear. You will read customer specs, create drawings, and coordinate with management, shop, and customers to ensure timely, accurate execution.

You will apply NEC/IEEE codes, develop control schemes in AutoCAD, and support sales and production. This role involves office, shop, and field settings across US facilities.

Qualifications

  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
  • 8–10 years engineering experience.
  • Advanced drafting and CAD capabilities.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical design and circuitry.
  • Advanced knowledge of power systems and relay applications.
  • Proficient with Oracle, Word, and Excel.
  • Experience with Primavera P6 for project updates.
  • Ability to read customer specifications and provide feedback.
  • Skilled in interpreting customer specifications and exceptions.
  • Ability to develop switchgear control schemes with AutoCAD.
  • Cost-conscious approach to engineered-to-order products.
  • Knowledge of NEC, ANSI/IEEE codes.
  • Understanding of power system applications and relay coordination.
  • Ability to work with policies, ISO requirements, safety, and vendor guidelines.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States full-time.

Responsibilities

  • Independently design standard jobs.
  • Read and interpret customer job specifications.
  • Develop detailed bills of materials for medium- and low-voltage switchgear.
  • Order materials as needed.
  • Create drawings.
  • Transmit drawings to the shop and to customers.
  • Coordinate with project management, customers, and the shop.
  • Direct designers in completing wiring diagrams.
  • Review wiring diagrams completed by others.
  • Stay aligned with project management throughout each project.
  • Maintain ongoing contact with production to answer questions and authorize design changes.
  • Follow standard engineering processes and timelines.
  • Manage multiple projects and prioritize workload.
  • Provide technical support to sales, engineering, and inspection teams.
  • Help other production engineers solve problems daily.

Requirements
Must have:
  • We hold a BS degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology, or a related discipline.
  • We bring 8--10 years of experience in an engineering capacity.

  • We demonstrate strong expertise in electrical design and circuitry.
  • We have advanced knowledge of power systems and relay applications as applied to products.
  • We are proficient with basic computer tools such as Oracle, Word, and Excel.
  • We can learn and use Primavera P6 to update project progress and keep assignments on track.
  • We can read customer specifications, compare them against quotations, and provide technical feedback to project management and customers with minimal supervision.
  • We are skilled in job reviews, including identifying exceptions, areas requiring special attention, and accurately interpreting customer specifications.
  • We can apply technical documentation to develop one-lines, three-lines, and control schemes for switchgear using AutoCAD.
  • We use cost-conscious methods to develop the most economical solution for engineered-to-order products.
  • We can apply NEC, ANSI/IEEE, and other relevant codes in day-to-day work.
  • We have a thorough understanding of power system applications, including relay application and coordination.
  • We can understand, interpret, and troubleshoot customer needs and issues.
  • We can work in accordance with policies, procedures, work instructions, ISO requirements, safety rules, and vendor product guidelines.
  • We must have legal authorization to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
