Job summary

Powell Industries is seeking a PCR Electrical Engineer to lead projects from concept to completion, drafting electrical construction drawings with AutoCAD and coordinating with mechanical/structural teams. Youll manage BOMs, perform design reviews, and mentor junior engineers while supporting client meetings and supplier coordination.

The role requires a BS in Electrical Engineering or related area, 4–8 years of experience, and strong knowledge of power distribution, switchgear, and NEC/IEEE

Responsibilities

  • Independently complete standard projects to match client specifications and requirements.
  • Draft electrical construction drawings using AutoCAD with in‑house teams.
  • Work with Project Management to interpret project write‑ups, client specs and drawings.
  • Create and validate Bills of Materials for PCR and Major Buyout items.
  • Complete self and peer design reviews before issuing projects to manufacturing.
  • Mentor junior engineers in the team.
  • Provide technical support in client meetings.
  • Coordinate with purchasing and suppliers to specify and approve components.
  • Notify supervisor of issues impacting scope, budget or schedule.
  • Gather and review interconnect documents to create interconnect sheets.
  • Create AC and DC panels drawings and circuits.
  • Support sales, application engineering, and inspection teams.
  • Assist production engineers with problem solving.
  • Adhere to policies, ISO standards, safety rules.
  • Meet regularly with clients, suppliers and OEMs.

Job description

As a PCR Electrical Engineer, you will elevate your career and make a significant impact by leading projects that deliver Best-in-Class fully integrated Power Control Rooms. At Powell, a PCR Electrical Engineer holds a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, or a related engineering discipline with a focus on power.The PCR engineer is considered the “technical face” of the project from concept to completion. The PCR engineer will be the lead engineer that all the other engineers assigned to that project will follow.If issues arise, the PCR Engineer has the final say in directing the team to make changes to their equipment as it relates to the layout of the PCR. The PCR Engineer works closely with all disciplines including Mechanical Engineering & Structural Engineering and the State Compliance team.You will be working with clients to meet their technical specifications and quality standards within the constraints of the budget and the schedule. Additionally, a PCR Electrical Engineer stays updated on industry trends. Essential Responsibilities
  • Independently complete standard projects to match client specifications and requirements
  • Draft electrical construction drawings using AutoCAD in conjunction with our in-house mechanical and structural teams
  • Work with the Project Management team to help interpret project write-ups, client specifications, drawings, and other correspondence during the life of the project
  • Create and validate Bills of Materials for the PCR and Major Buyout items for client submittal and approval
  • Complete self and peer design reviews to verify accuracy and completeness of designs before issuing projects to Powell’s manufacturing floor for construction
  • Mentor junior engineers in their team
  • Provide technical support in client meetings
  • Coordinate with purchasing and suppliers to specify & approve component parts and assemblies
  • Provide prompt notification to supervisor and project management for issues that impact scope, budget, and schedule
  • Gathers and reviews all PCR Interconnect related documents including equipment drawings to create a detailed interconnect excel sheet.
  • Determines any missing interconnect information and requests this information from the client via the PM team.
  • Create AC and DC Panels drawings and circuits
  • Provide technical support as necessary for sales, application engineering, and inspection teams throughout the life of the project
  • Assists fellow production engineers in solving problems daily
  • Adhere to Powell’s policies and procedures, work instructions, ISO policies, Safety Rules and Regulations
  • Meet regularly with clients, suppliers and OEMs
Minimum Qualifications
  • BS Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology or related area
  • Minimum 4-8 years of experience in an Engineering role
  • Advanced drafting/ACAD skills
  • Proficient in electrical SWGR design and control schemes.
  • Proficient in understanding power systems and relay applications as applied to switchgear products
Required Experience Is Proportionate With the Selected Job Level
  • The Engineer level requires a Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline and 0-3 years of relevant job‑related experience
  • The Senior Engineer level requires a Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline and 4-8 years of relevant job‑related experience
  • The Lead Engineer level requires Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline and 7-10 years of relevant job‑related experience
Skills, Abilities & Other Requirements
  • Ability to manage & prioritize multiple projects, schedules and budgets in a fast‑paced environment
  • Solid organization, communication, presentation and planning skills
  • Experience in carrying out engineering development types of tasks and addressing production issues
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others in a cross‑functional team environment
  • Highly self‑motivated in working on “first‑of‑its‑kind” projects that require resilience and tenacity
  • Strong problem‑solving skills, and the ability to troubleshoot complex system‑level problems
  • Solid understanding of one‑line and three‑line drawings, control schematics, and point to point wiring diagrams
  • Familiarity with power distribution equipment (three phase systems, relays, transformers, control switches, etc.)
  • Good understanding of 480V through 38kV electrical distribution and switchgear operation
  • Familiar with applicable sections of the National Electric Code and other codes and standards such as IEEE, ANSI and UL
  • Able to form and apply cost competitive techniques to develop the most cost‑effective solution for the engineered to order product
  • Possess a strong customer service commitment
  • Proficient at project specification and drawing reviews (i.e., acquired knowledge of specification items that Powell should take exception to and specification items that require special attention; able to accurately interpret client specifications, etc.)
Working & Environmental Conditions
  • The employee typically performs duties in a normal office environment. There will be some work in a shop environment and exposure to the elements of our shop. Additionally, there may be some work performed in the field with exposure to construction sites or active customer facilities.
