Position Overview
An established power generation organization is seeking an experienced Lead Electrical Engineer to lead electrical engineering activities supporting the refurbishment, conversion, and redeployment of gas turbine generating units for data center and industrial power applications.
This role focuses on generator condition assessment, protective relay systems, excitation systems, and electrical equipment specifications. The successful candidate will evaluate existing equipment, define refurbishment and upgrade requirements, review vendor documentation, and provide technical leadership throughout testing and commissioning.
Experience with synchronous generators, generator protection, and excitation systems is essential. Experience with equipment from any major generator, relay, or excitation system manufacturer will be considered.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead generator condition assessments using inspection and test data, including insulation resistance, polarization index, winding resistance, partial discharge, wedge tightness, borescope inspections, and visual assessments.
- Recommend generator repair, rewinding, rewedge, or replacement based on equipment condition and test results.
- Establish technical requirements for generator inspections, refurbishment, 50/60 Hz conversions, and uprate projects.
- Review generator shop reports, test results, and compliance with applicable OEM requirements.
- Specify, review, and verify static and brushless excitation systems, including automatic voltage regulator (AVR) and power system stabilizer (PSS) settings, limiters, and upgrade requirements.
- Lead the development and review of generator and unit protection schemes, including relay settings for generator, transformer, and associated electrical equipment protection.
- Coordinate with protection study consultants on relay settings and protection system requirements.
- Oversee technical reviews of short‑circuit, protective coordination, arc flash, and load flow studies.
- Prepare technical specifications and review vendor submittals for generators, generator circuit breakers, medium‑voltage switchgear, transformers, auxiliary power systems, and grounding.
- Provide technical leadership during electrical testing and commissioning, including relay testing, excitation tuning, generator testing, and synchronization.
- Troubleshoot electrical failures and equipment trips, lead or support root‑cause analysis, and recommend corrective actions.
- Coordinate with controls engineering, systems engineering, operations, vendors, repair facilities, and project teams to resolve technical issues and maintain equipment quality.
- Establish standardized engineering practices, testing procedures, and acceptance criteria across generating units.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
- 10+ years of electrical engineering experience in power generation, working for an OEM, repair facility, utility, independent power producer (IPP), engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firm, or owner's engineering organization.
- Strong working knowledge of synchronous generators, including design principles, testing, condition assessment, and repair.
- Strong working knowledge of protective relay systems, including generator, transformer, and bus protection, relay settings development, and testing.
- Strong working knowledge of excitation systems, including static and brushless exciters, AVR tuning, and PSS.
- Ability to evaluate technical test data, assess equipment condition, and develop sound engineering recommendations.
- Strong technical writing skills for specifications, test reviews, engineering assessments, and technical dispositions.
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical reviews, coordinate engineering activities, and resolve complex electrical issues.
- Authorization to work in the United States without current or future employer-sponsored visa support.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required, up to 30%.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in Electrical Engineering.
- Experience with microprocessor-based protective relays, such as SEL, GE Multilin, or Beckwith.
- Experience with excitation platforms such as GE EX2100, ABB Unitrol, or Basler.
- Working knowledge of gas turbine control systems, including GE Mark VI/VIe, and balance‑of‑plant distributed control systems (DCS).
- Familiarity with NERC PRC standards, including PRC-019, PRC-024, and PRC-025.
- Knowledge of generator model validation requirements, including MOD-026 and MOD-027.
- Experience with power system analysis software such as ETAP, SKM, or EasyPower.
Initial Priorities
- During the first 90 days, the Lead Electrical Engineer will be expected to:
- Review generator condition assessments, test data, and compliance status for units undergoing refurbishment.
- Document existing protection and excitation system configurations across assigned generating units and identify technical gaps.
- Develop standardized generator testing, inspection, and acceptance criteria.
- Identify electrical equipment risks and establish technical requirements for refurbishment, upgrades, and commissioning.
- Competitive compensation and benefits based on experience.
