Job summary

Root 3 Power, LLC in Houston, TX seeks a Senior Electrical Designer to join our team. You will execute a wide range of drafting and design assignments for low and medium voltage power systems, producing construction packages, single- and three-line diagrams, and related drawings in AutoCAD.

You will lead internal design efforts, mentor junior designers, ensure NEC/NFPA/NESC/IEEE compliance, and manage schedules and budgets.

Qualifications

• Associate degree preferred.
• Minimum of 8 years of AutoCAD experience within industrial power distribution.
• Proven proficiency in three-phase power systems, AC/DC control circuits, and instrument transformers.
• Experience developing breaker control schematics, wiring diagrams, and interconnected wiring packages.
• Strong communication and leadership skills, mentoring junior designers and interfacing with project teams.
• Knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, and NESC standards.

Responsibilities

• Prepare 2D drawings in AutoCAD for construction packages (Single Line, Three Line Diagrams, Equipment Elevations, Breaker Schematics, Wiring Diagrams, Plot Plans).
• Lead development for internal design specifications and standard drawing templates.
• Check engineering drawings for accuracy and adherence to client specs.
• Provide training and mentorship to junior drafting/design staff.
• Manage schedules, budgets, and project specifications to meet goals.
• Determine manpower requirements and delegate tasks to the team.
• Ensure electrical design meets NEC/NFPA/NESC/IEEE standards.
• Participate in project meetings.
• Occasionally travel to domestic sites for data collection or client meetings.

• High Voltage Substation Design – Physical layouts (GAs), elevations, grounding grids, and lightning protection for outdoor substations.
• Power Distribution – Low and Medium Voltage (LV/MV) system design, including equipment sizing, conduit/cable routing, and plot plans.
• Protection & Control (P&C) – Development of relaying schemes, breaker control schematics, and wiring diagrams for various protective devices.
• Renewable Energy – E&I design for Solar, Wind, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

Job Description

Root 3 Power is seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Designer to join our team in Houston, TX.The Electrical Designer 5 will execute a wide range of drafting and design assignments pertaining to the design, construction, control, and operation of low and medium voltage electrical power systems.

Typical tasks include:

• Prepare 2D drawings in AutoCAD for construction packages including, but not limited to:
• Single Line Diagram
• Three Line Diagram
• Equipment Elevations (Switchgear, Motor Control Centers, Transformers, and Panels)
• Breaker Control Schematics
• Wiring Diagrams
• Plot Plans (Power, Grounding, Instrumentation, and Conduit/Cable Tray)
• Lead development efforts for internal design specifications and standard drawing templates
• Check engineering drawings for accuracy and adherence to client design specifications
• Provide training and mentorship to less experienced drafting and design team members
• Manage schedules, budgets, and project specifications to meet project goals
• Determine manpower requirements and delegate project tasks to drafting and design team members
• Ensure electrical design meets or exceeds the requirements provided in industry standards such as the NEC, NFPA, NESC, and IEEE
• Participate in project meetings
• Occasionally travel to domestic sites for data collection or client meetings

Job Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in CAD, Drafting Technology, or Electrical Design from a Technical Institution preferred.
• Minimum of 8 years of AutoCAD experience specifically within industrial power distribution, petrochemical, or heavy industrial sectors.
• Proven technical proficiency in advanced electrical design concepts, including three-phase power systems, AC/DC control circuits, and instrument transformers.
• Demonstrated experience independently developing complex breaker control schematics, wiring diagrams, and interconnected wiring packages from engineering notes.
• Strong communication and leadership skills, with a track record of mentoring junior designers and interfacing directly with project engineering teams.
• Knowledgeable in the application of industry codes and standards such as the NEC, NFPA 70E, and NESC.
• Must have the legal right to work in the United States. Root 3 Power does not provide immigration or work visa sponsorship.
• Must be capable of standing, walking, climbing stairs, carrying tools/equipment up to 50 lbs., and wearing appropriate PPE for site walkdowns.
• Able to travel by car or plane to client jobsites within the United States (0-10%).
