We are seeking a senior-level electrical design engineer to lead the electrical development of custom high-voltage test systems used by R&D teams across advanced engineering programs. This position combines technical leadership with deep hands-on design ownership. The engineer will guide a small electrical engineering team while personally designing, building, validating, troubleshooting, and deploying complex test equipment.
Responsibilities
- Own the electrical design of custom test systems from initial concept and requirements through prototyping, integration, validation, commissioning, and deployment.
- Design high-voltage electrical systems operating approximately from 400 V to 1,000 V, including appropriate safety, protection, and interlock considerations.
- Design and develop power electronics such as AC/DC, DC/DC, and DC/AC converters, inverters, bidirectional power systems, motor drives, and related equipment.
- Create custom PCB electronics and electrical subsystems, including schematic capture, component selection, layout oversight, board bring-up, debugging, and validation.
- Produce electrical schematics, bills of materials, harness drawings, and system-level interconnection documentation.
- Lead system bring-up, root-cause analysis, troubleshooting, and performance validation for advanced test equipment.
- Partner closely with Mechanical, Software, Firmware, Controls, Regulatory, Manufacturing, and internal engineering customers.
- Lead, coach, and mentor approximately two to four electrical engineers while remaining deeply involved in technical design work.
- Support local laboratory work and occasional deployment or troubleshooting travel.
Qualifications
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
Required Skills
- Approximately 5-8 years of experience leading engineers or technical workstreams while remaining highly hands-on.
- Demonstrated experience personally designing high-voltage equipment or systems in the 400 V to 1,000 V range.
- Strong power electronics design and development experience, including converters, inverters, bidirectional power, motor drives, or high-power supplies.
- Hands-on experience designing PCBs and schematics from scratch. Testing-only or debugging-only PCB experience is not sufficient.
- Experience delivering a complete electrical product or test system from concept through integration, validation, and deployment.
- Strong system-level troubleshooting skills and the ability to solve complex hardware integration issues.
- Ability to lead a small engineering group while maintaining direct ownership of critical design work.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in a fast-paced startup, advanced R&D, test and measurement, robotics, automotive, energy, or high-power equipment environment.
- Experience with laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, high-voltage probes, current probes, power analyzers, power supplies, and data acquisition systems.
- Familiarity with Altium or similar PCB design tools, MATLAB/Simulink, LTspice, Python, LabVIEW, test automation, embedded systems, or industrial communication protocols.
- Knowledge of motors, dynamometers, drives, switchgear, design for manufacturing, FMEA, EMI, signal integrity, and electrical safety documentation.
What Success Looks Like
The successful engineer can take an ambiguous testing need, define the electrical architecture, personally execute the most critical design work, coordinate a small team, and deliver a safe, reliable, fully integrated test system for engineering use.
