Job summary

RI Hospital seeks an EEG Technician Supervisor to oversee recording of brain electrical activity, ensure correct electrode placement, and maintain safety standards for adult and pediatric patients in the EEG lab.

You will mentor staff, supervise up to 7 FTEs, coordinate procedures, and contribute to QA, scheduling and patient comfort during EEG studies.

Must have post-high school EEG training and ABRET eligibility within three years, with demonstrated leadership in a hospital setting.

Job description

SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Medical Director and Department Administrator, according to established procedures, prepares, conducts electroencephalographic examinations, collects information, and prepares impressions of findings to assist physician in evaluating and diagnosing cerebral conditions by recording the brain 's electrical activity. Monitors EEG activity of patients under anesthesia and obtains recordings necessary for determination of cerebral death. Participates in interviews and recommends selection of EEG technologists and clerical staff assigned to department. Directs work of staff, including evaluating performance. RESPONSIBILITIES

Interviews patient to obtain pertinent medical history, to explain and instruct patient regarding procedure and to allay anxiety and elicit cooperation. Abstracts additional relevant information from patient 's chart or medical record. Ensures that electrodes are properly sterilized, applies electrodes on predetermined measured positions on patient 's head and checks electrode performance. Uses appropriate precautionary measures to prevent infections when using needle electrodes. Uses judgment in placement of electrodes in deviating from standard practice in order to obtain best results. Calibrates intravenous and oxygen apparatus on patients requiring such therapy and reports any malfunction to appropriate personnel. Selects predetermined electrode combinations as well as special combinations appropriate to the specific case. Obtains and continuously scans recordings, recognizes artifacts and takes appropriate action to eliminate them. Uses activating procedures such as hyperventilation and photic stimulation to induce and record brain reaction. Makes notation on record of all actions taken during procedure and records clinical manifestations observed during test such as patient 's degree of alertness versus drowsiness. Reviews and analyzes tracings. Prepares impressions of findings indicating technical changes that are focal, lateralized, paraxynol or artifactual. Provides training and guidance to other technologist. Interviews, recommends hiring, evaluates and when necessary, disciplines or recommends discharge of subordinate technical and clerical personnel. Prepares monthly statistics of number and types of tests, inpatients, outpatients, locations where work performed, etc. Provides in-service instruction to other non-EEG clinical personnel through lectures and seminars on topics regarding new procedures and techniques to staff members and other personnel. May assume total responsibility when EEG tests are performed in radiology or operating room. May monitor brain activity of patients under anesthesia and communicates patient information to surgeon during procedure. Supports EEG monitoring when assigned to special procedures lab or operating room, to include brain mapping, intraoperative EEG recording, special electrode intrarecording and WADA studies. Performs premature baby testing at Rhode Island Hospital and /or Woman and Infants Hospital. Provides patient perpetration, including measuring of head and placement of electrodes. Observes three physiological parameters in addition to multi-channel EEG recordings: eye movements, respiration, and cardiac activity. Records clinical changes to explain EEG findings. May conduct closed-circuit video recordings, requiring knowledge of electronic capabilities of equipment. Conducts EEG monitoring on patients with specialized electrodes. Adheres to proper sterilization procedures in placing needle electrodes on patients. Provides stimulus where visual / auditory reactions are induced. Maintains equipment in clean, operating condition; detects instrumental malfunction; makes minor repairs and adjustments and reports the need for major repairs. Performs quality assurance activities according to department procedures and program. May provide long-term monitoring of pediatric and adult patients with epilepsy and N.S. condition. Maintains and enhances technical expertise by participating in appropriate educational activities including attending conferences and meetings and reading relevant journals. Provides on-call services, nights weekends and holidays as scheduled.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

BASIC KNOWLEDGE: Successful completion of post-high school program in a one or two year accredited program in EEG technology. Eligibility to sit for written examination for formal registration by the American Board of Registration in Electroencephalographic Technology within three years of placement in position (1,000 EEG examinations are required). Knowledge of EEG techniques, concepts and equipment. Ability to apply knowledge to clinical settings and expand upon it through experience. Knowledge of pathological disorders directly affecting brain and other medical conditions indirectly causing brain dysfunction. Ability to measure and place electrodes accurately and manipulate controls on EEG machines. Ability and capacity for sustained attention to detect minor differences or abnormalities while scanning a moving graph of constantly changing data for period of up to two hours. Analytical ability and communication skills necessary to formulate and write concise technical impressions of EEG findings. Interpersonal skills to explain procedures, allay anxiety and gain cooperation of very ill patients. Leadership skills to effectively direct and evaluate work of technical and clerical personnel assigned to department. Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.


EXPERIENCE

At least two years experience performing full range of EEG procedures, including demonstrated leadership skills.


WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Normal patient care environment, with some exposure to infectious disease or unpleasant patient care activities. Some exposure to volatile substances such as acetone, ether and alcohol. Hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety and infection control guidelines. Some physical effort to cope with patients with behavioral problems who may be combative. Manual dexterity to measure and place electrodes accurately and manipulate controls on EEG machines. Visual acuity and capacity for sustained attention to detect minor differences or abnormalities while scanning a moving graph of constantly changing data for period of up to two hours.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

Supervisory responsibility for up to 7 FTEs.


Pay Range: $28.12-$46.39
