Job summary

Tidewater Community College in Chesapeake, VA is seeking a Lead Custodian for the day shift to maintain clean and safe facilities across campus operations. Responsibilities include trash removal, floor care, and setup/take-down as needed.

Preferred applicants have janitorial or housekeeping experience, can lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and hold a valid driver’s license; supervision duties may apply. Work hours: Monday–Friday 3:00pm–11:30pm with occasional weekends; this is a full-time,

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Provides custodial/housekeeping services including trash removal, vacuuming, mopping, dusting, sweeping, floor stripping/waxing, carpet cleaning, window cleaning.
• Provides room set-up/take-down assistance as assigned.
• Performs other cleaning tasks as assigned.
• Maintains good attendance and reports problems to Managers.

Job Description

Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 25,000 students in 2024-25. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College ( TCC ) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,399 graduates in 2024-2025, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. • Provides a full range of custodial/ housekeeping services for college facilities to include, but not limited to, trash removal, vacuuming, mopping, dusting, sweeping, floor stripping and waxing, carpet cleaning, window cleaning, black/white-board cleaning, etc.
• Provides room set-up/take-down assistance as assigned.
• Performs other cleaning tasks as assigned.
• Maintain and demonstrate good attendance habits.
• Reports any problems to Managers when necessary.
• Assist Custodial Manager in selecting, training, supervising and evaluating other housekeepers.

This position has been designated an essential position. The employee filling this position may be required to report to work or otherwise fulfill the responsibilities of the position in the event of a college/ campus closure due to weather or other emergent condition(s).

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications

• Working knowledge of the principles and practices of janitorial, custodial, and housekeeping services, sanitizing techniques to include floor and carpet care and maintneance.
• Knowledge of custodial operations and industry standards
• Ability to climb ladders without assistance
• Ability to lift objects not more than 50 lbs
• Valid driver’s license
• Experience in a janitorial, custodial, or housekeeping operations as a shift leader .

Additional Considerations

• Experience within a multi-building housekeeping operation
• Experience in a college or university environment.
