QUALIFICATIONS: Has at least limited experience as a school custodian or the equivalent in other institutions or firms. Possesses knowledge in the ability to perform the basic techniques of electrical repair and maintenance, carpentry, plumbing and HVAC. Reads basic operating instructions and is able to write reports. Completes assigned tasks successfully in a timely fashion. Heavy physical effort (lift/carry up to 50 lbs.). Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking. Pushes/pulls or moves/lifts heavy equipment/supplies. Manual dexterity and mobility. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching.
JOB DESCRIPTION: LEAD CUSTODIAN
TITLE: Lead Custodian
REPORTS TO: Building Administrators and to the Facilities Director
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Ensures the provision of a clean, safe, attractive, comfortable atmosphere for students and personnel.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Checks and takes readings on boilers and other major equipment that must be checked daily and performs maintenance on same.
- Assists the first and second shift custodians in the assignment, scheduling and training of new members of the custodial staff.
- Maintains and participates in necessary painting and general repairs including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, HVAC and other facilities or equipment.
- Assists general mechanics or contractors in remodeling and renovation as assigned by the Facilities Director.
- Coordinates and participates in the general cleaning and maintenance of the school building during the first shift.
- Requisitions and receives supplies and equipment and maintains inventories on same.
- Assumes responsibility for the general security and fire safety of the assigned building in concert with the building administrator.
- Keeps an accurate record of the extra-curricular use of the facilities and keeps the Principal and Director informed of any concerns.
- Removes snow and ice and spreads ice thaw in all walkways, steps, entrances and other areas as needed.
- Performs emergency repairs or cleaning services as necessary.
- Regulates heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and insures economical usage of fuel, water and electricity.
- Checks daily that all appropriate doors are open and panic bars and door latches are in good working condition at all times.
- Coordinates work of the first and second shifts to make sure all areas are covered for general cleaning.
- Checks on the second shift to make sure all areas are covered for general cleaning.
- Strives to promote the safety, health, and comfort of the students, staff and visitors to the building.
- Notifies the Principal and the Facilities Director of any disciplinary problems with custodians.
- Assists the Director and Principal with the evaluation of the custodial staff and with the preparation of the custodial budget.
- Assists with mowing and other outside duties when directed by the Facilities Director.
