This position is located at Orange Correctional Center in Hillsborough, NC. Orange County. Orange Correctional Center is a male minimum custody facility. Reporting to the Correctional Sergeant I, this position is responsible for supervision of offenders and staff. This position responsibilities include the following:

  • Ensure the care, custody, and control of offenders.
  • Tour assigned areas which will require periodically climbing stairs.
  • Observe Offender activity in person and on closed-circuit monitors.
  • Identify offenders who have behavioral, medical, or other problems so that appropriate safety and security measures may be taken.
  • Perform general security duties to prevent escape, disorder, rule infractions, and harm to offenders, visitors, and staff.
  • Perform searches offenders, visitors, cells and other areas for weapons and contraband.
  • Monitor and regulate offender and staff movement.
  • Maintain and record offender counts, cell assignments, and other pertinent information.
  • Escort offenders within and outside the institution.
  • Use and maintain keys and other equipment.
  • Supervise offender work details.
  • Supervise staff.
  • Provide custody supervision for offenders housed in a restrictive housing area, including Intensive Control, Administrative Segregation, and Disciplinary Segregation.
  • Enforce rules and regulations for safety, health, and protection of offenders.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. The selected candidate may be selected to work any shift and will work weekends and holidays to ensure 24/7 staff coverage.

“As of January 1, 2025, there are new increase adjustments to the state’s pay plans which were approved by the State Human Resources Commission, effective January 1, 2025.

The new salary range(s) will be $37,621 - $48,953 Prior applicants will remain under consideration and do not need to reapply.”

If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. About the NC Dept. of Adult Correction (DAC):

The Dept. of Adult Correction is responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes State Prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as the division of Community Supervision. Other divisions include Administration, Compliance & Accreditation, Comprehensive Health Services, Internal Affairs & Intelligence Operations, Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission, and Rehabilitation & Reentry.


Orange Correctional Centerin Hillsborough NC is a minimum-security prison for adult males. The prison originally housed medium custody offenders and was converted to a minimum-security unit in 1966. Piedmont Community College works with the prison to provide vocational classes in food service technology and light construction.
