Job summary

Job description

Lead Cold Room Worker

Supervises the daily activities of sandwich, salad, and other take‑out production, including production line management, equipment setup, and quality control. Responsible for training student employees, ensuring food safety compliance, and improving operational efficiency.

What you’ll do in this role
  • Train and supervise student employees; recommend discipline and recognition.
  • Manage meat, cheese, and wrapper production; set priorities, monitor quantity, and ensure efficient clean‑up.
  • Evaluate processes to maximize use of 150‑200 weekly student hours; solve problems following equipment malfunctions, late deliveries, or absences.
  • Ensure accurate order fulfillment and delivery to shipping; verify all areas are sanitized before next day’s production.
  • Schedule preventive maintenance and follow up on safety or operational repairs.
  • Train in equipment use; keep safety compliance for student employees.
  • Inspect raw ingredient inventory; enforce recipe consistency and quality standards.
  • Participate in weekend coverage rotation with other room leaders.
  • Assist with large‑quantity production for special events (e.g., Women’s Conference, Education Week, Home Football games).
  • Substitute in other production areas as needed.
What qualifies you for this role
  • Required: Firm commitment to BYU’s mission. 2 years of culinary or manufacturing related experience. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter‑day Saints must hold a current temple recommend.
  • Preferred: Culinary Arts degree or ACF (American Culinary Federation) certification.
  • Physical exam and lift test required. Moderate physical effort with frequent handling of medium‑weight objects (20‑50 lbs) and use of hand tools.
  • Ability to work in variable temperatures, including ~40°F cold rooms and occasional access to a 0°F freezer.
  • Competence in maintenance of specialized production equipment; training required.

Pay Grade: 48

Typical Starting Pay: $20.50 to $26.50 per hour, subject to internal equity and candidate qualifications.
