Job summary

Brigham Young University Hawaii is seeking a team-oriented food service assistant to support preparation and serving for Cafeteria, Catering and Farmer's Market. The role focuses on food prep accuracy, diet knowledge, and cost control.

Qualifications

  • Help control food and labor costs by reducing waste and proper storage.
  • Visually inspect all food from the kitchen.
  • Participate in more complex preparation and cooking.
  • Train and supervise student employees to be leaders.

Job Summary

Assists in the preparation and serving of food for Cafeteria, Catering and Farmer's Market.

Primary Responsibilities
Food Preparation and Cost (60%)
  • Assists in preparation and serving of food for the main service outlets.
  • Maintains specialty foods know-how, including gluten-free, vegetarian, and restricted diet meals.
  • Utilizes fresh herbs from the Food Services garden.
  • Helps control food and labor costs by reducing waste with proper techniques and storage of food products.
  • Visually inspects all food sent from the kitchen.
  • Participates in more complex preparation and cooking of food.
Sanitation and Safety (30%)
  • Maintains awareness of routine cleaning schedules and points out areas for deep cleaning as needed.
  • Utilizes sanitation solution properly.
  • Keeps uniform clean at all times.
  • Follows safety procedures and reports repair needs to management.
Training and Other (10%)
  • Trains new recruits.
  • Supervises and trains student employees to be leaders.
  • Fosters good working habits by setting an example.
  • Conducts meetings when necessary.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience

High school diploma or GED, one year of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure; compute rate, ratio, and percent.
License or Certification
  • Current food handlers’ permit.
  • HAZCOM training required.
  • Must be willing to work toward Serve Safe certification
