Purpose: To perform duties necessary for decontamination, cleaning, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, distribution, and documentation of reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment according to established procedures. Coordinates daily operations of the department, oversees new personnel orientation, and assumes charge in the absence of the director. Performs other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities:
  1. Independently manage the department during off-shifts and weekends or in the absence of the director.
  2. Follow department policies concerning decontamination, sterile processing, infection control, and safety.
  3. Arrange in-service education programs.
  4. Perform related duties as assigned, especially during emergencies.
  5. Apply performance improvement tools to enhance quality of care and work environment. Share improvements with others.
  6. Prepare and assemble surgical trays and equipment following established listings.
  7. Maintain knowledge of and troubleshoot decontamination/sterilization equipment.
  8. Act as liaison between SPD and OR.
  9. Evaluate staff schedules and reassign staff as needed.
  10. Demonstrate commitment to UPMC's Core Values, understanding patient and staff needs, and ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  11. Participate in committee and task force activities.
  12. Communicate effectively, support internal and external customers, and develop skills through education.
  13. Build positive relationships through mentoring and cultural diversity awareness.
  14. Assess supplies for surgical procedures, maintain inventory, and ensure proper cleaning and disinfection of equipment.
  15. Participate in new staff orientation.
  16. Model team behaviors and develop management skills through courses and seminars.
  17. Assist with performance appraisals.
  18. Monitor sterilizer parameters and troubleshoot proactively.
  19. Serve as resource for department information.
  20. Clean and decontaminate reusable equipment manually and mechanically.
  21. Manage department during off-shifts and weekends.
  22. Ensure professional development and lead change initiatives.
  23. Coordinate all departmental services and instrumentation management.
  24. Mentor and educate others, participate in preceptorship, and share expertise.
  25. Maintain records and promote cost containment.
  26. Communicate clearly, think critically, and promote patient safety and satisfaction.
  27. Meet minimum qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent; 3 years sterile processing experience or graduate of accredited program with 2 years experience; annual continuing education; ability to stand and lift 35 pounds.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Certification from Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, CRST, or IAHCSMM required in PA and NY.
  • Act 34 clearance.
