Job summary

The University of Michigan is seeking a skilled carpenter to construct, install, and repair structures and fixtures using wood and other materials. You will read construction documents, measure, cut, and assemble components while operating hand and power tools to ensure quality and safety compliance.

Responsibilities include installing various fixtures, reading diagrams, selecting materials, liaising with clients and other professionals, and leading jobsite teams.

Job description

Job Summary

Construct, install, and repair structures and fixtures, using wood and other materials. Read construction documents, measure, cut, and assemble components like framework, walls, cabinets, and flooring while operating various hand and power tools to ensure quality and safety compliance.

Responsibilities*
  • Assemble, install, and repair, structures and fixtures to include: floors, wall assemblies, partitions, molding, windows sashes, cement forms, frames, platforms, baseboards, scaffolding, shoring, suspended ceilings, whiteboards, doors, door hardware, built-in bookcases, desks, casework, and counters.
  • Cut, shape, and assemble components according to construction documents and sketches.
  • Install interior and exterior trim
  • Install and repair door hardware, to include hinges, locksets, latches, and closures.
  • Alter or repair furniture or fixtures, to include chairs, desks, cabinets, and bookcases.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction documents, diagrams, sketches, and specifications.
  • Ability to select appropriate job materials to suit each job, source to suit budget and style.
  • Proven success liaising with clients, suppliers, architects, engineers, and other construction professionals.
  • Assemble jobsite material lists, and acquire materials, equipment, and tools.
  • Prepare records and service reports documenting materials utilized, time expended, daily reports, and jobsite status.
  • Lead and direct teams, inspecting and directing work.
  • Wear all appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Contribute to keeping jobsites safe.
  • Strong knowledge of construction safety requirements.
Required Qualifications*
  • Ability to perform all duties listed above.
  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
  • Ability to work proficiently, accurately and to make and keep scheduled commitments.
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Ability to exercise tact and discretion in relationships with others.
  • Ability to work independently, and as part of a team.
  • Service orientated, and willingness to do varies levels and kinds of carpentry tasks.
  • Proven ability to provide exceptional customer service
  • Fulfill the necessary requirements to drive University vehicles.
  • Considerable knowledge of the tools, methods, and materials used in carpentry.
  • Reasonable manual strength and dexterity
  • Ability to work from ladders and scaffolding.
  • Ability to maintain tools and equipment
  • Knowledge of Google products, smartphone technology, tablet technology, computers, and construction management software.
  • Ability to conduct online research.
  • Ability to wear a respirator or fresh air hood.
  • Ability and willingness to work in animal and morgue areas.
Desired Qualifications*
  • Knowledge of building regulations and codes.
  • Experience and certification in the operation of aerial lifts (scissor lift, JLG's etc.).
  • Experience working in hospital and health care facilities.
  • Experience working in laboratory facilities.
  • Knowledge of interim life safety methods.
  • Willingness to work overtime if required.
  • Experience working with an automated work order system.
Work Schedule

Hours are 7 AM to 3:15 PM, Monday-Friday
