Job summary

The University of Akron seeks a data analytics professional to manage ad hoc information requests, complex extractions, analyses, and reporting from institutional databases and surveys. You will supervise staff, provide oversight and mentoring, and design recurring and ad hoc queries and dashboards to support strategic decision-making.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science/Data Analytics or related discipline with 4 years' experience analyzing databases using SQL or other query languages (Python, R, SAS).
  • 2 years' experience in Institutional Research or advanced analytic reporting in higher education, incl. dashboards and compliance reporting.
  • 2 years' experience using statistical/database software (Access, Excel, Oracle) for IR or reporting in higher education.

Job description

Duties

Managing the ad hoc requests for information and analysis, which may require complex extractions, analyses, and reporting/visualization of information contained within institutional databases, surveys, and external information. Supervising other staff working within the department providing oversight, guidance, and mentoring. Assigning work to supervised staff and monitoring progress on tasks. Serving as primary access point for internal and external requests for university information and in the design and development of recurring and ad hoc queries, analytics and reporting objects. Actively integrates campus, departmental and relevant external data into analysis, research, and planning projects. Regularly engages in institutional data analysis and produces reports and information that support strategic decision-making. Assesses existing data using sophisticated statistical techniques to predict and forecast likely future outcomes and prepares appropriate tabular, text and interactive visualization reports. Synthesize complex issues and present them via dashboards and reports in a creative and nontechnical manner. Supports requests, priorities, and procedures for improving data presentation, reporting, special projects, and links with external sources. Maintaining working knowledge of critical systems and data sources; serving on various university institutional and governance groups and bodies. Keeping current on emerging trends and directions in data reporting and database administration. Provides high-quality data and analyses, identifies gaps in reporting needs and additional data required. Works collaboratively with other analysts from Planning, Strategy and Insights, and across campus. Utilizes creative presentation techniques to gain interest in analyses that advance decision making and support implementation of projects, programs, and new initiatives. Provides advice and training to other analysts.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science/Data Analytics, or related discipline and 4 years' experience analyzing databases using SQL (or other query languages such as Python, R, SAS).
  • 2 years' experience in Institutional Research, completing higher education state/federal compliance reports, or advanced analytic reporting in a higher education environment (some examples include: creating institutional dashboards which analyzing higher educational data and trends or providing data and analytics for accreditation).
  • 2 years' experience utilizing statistical and database management software (such as Access, Excel, Oracle, or related) to assist in Institutional Research, state/federal compliance reporting, or advanced analytic reporting in a higher education environment.
Compensation

The compensation for this position is commensurate with experience.
