Job summary

The City of Lynden seeks a Building Official who provides leadership, technical expertise, and cross-department coordination to protect life, property, and community standards. You will oversee building plan review, inspections, permitting, and building code enforcement, ensuring compliance with adopted codes across residential, commercial, and industrial projects.

Qualifications

• Two years of post-secondary college or technical instruction in building technology, construction management, mechanical, plumbing, or building construction.
• Four years of experience in general construction and related fields.
• Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
• Candidates must possess, or obtain within twelve months of employment, Washington Building Official (WABO) certification.

Responsibilities

• Lead and enforce city building and fire codes within permits and plan reviews.
• Oversee plan reviews for residential, commercial, and industrial projects.
• Issue permits, Certificates of Occupancy, and permit conditions with written and oral instructions.
• Coordinate interdepartmentally with Planning, Public Works, and Fire Department.
• Inspect ongoing construction for code compliance across trades.
• Provide technical interpretations and training to staff.
