Responsibilities

  • Lead daily shift operations and assign technicians according to guest impact, safety, urgency, skill requirements, and hotel priorities.
  • Conduct shift briefings, confirm coverage, communicate priorities, and follow through on outstanding work.
  • Monitor response times, productivity, repair quality, and completion of assigned responsibilities.
  • Coordinate engineering support with Front Office, Housekeeping, Food & Beverage, Security, and other hotel departments.
  • Escalate significant guest, asset, safety, staffing, or operational risks to the Director of Engineering.
  • Assume operational leadership of the department in the Director of Engineering’s absence.
  • Coordinate work-order assignments, priorities, status updates, and timely closure.
  • Ensure preventive maintenance is completed according to established schedules and documented accurately.
  • Inspect completed work to confirm quality, functionality, cleanliness, and adherence to standards.
  • Identify repeat failures, incomplete repairs, and aging work orders; recommend corrective action and permanent solutions.
  • Reduce reactive maintenance by strengthening inspections, planning, communication, and follow-through.
  • Provide hands-on technical direction for the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of hotel systems and equipment.
  • Maintain working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, refrigeration, mechanical, controls, water treatment, life safety, emergency power, elevators, locks, guest-room equipment, and pool or wellness systems.
  • Diagnose equipment failures, establish safe interim measures when necessary, and coordinate appropriate repair or escalation.
  • Ensure tools and equipment are used correctly and maintained in safe operating condition.
  • Coordinate approved carpentry, finish, locksmith, and general building-repair activities as assigned.
  • Provide daily direction, coaching, and technical instruction to engineering associates.
  • Reinforce individual ownership, professional conduct, communication standards, and timely follow-through.
  • Address performance or conduct concerns promptly and communicate significant matters to the Director of Engineering.
  • Promote teamwork and build the technical capability required for a dependable, self-sufficient operation.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to guest-impacting engineering issues while minimizing disruption.
  • Partner with operating departments to restore room or public-area functionality and support appropriate service recovery.
  • Conduct property walks and identify conditions that could affect comfort, safety, functionality, or presentation.
  • Protect guest privacy, hotel confidentiality, and the appearance of occupied and public spaces during all work.
  • Always maintain positive guest and associate interactions.
  • Enforce departmental safety procedures, proper use of personal protective equipment, and safe work practices.
  • Identify hazards, remove unsafe conditions when possible, and escalation risks requiring additional support.
  • Support required inspections, testing, documentation, and corrective actions for critical building and life safety systems.
  • Respond to alarms, utility interruptions, equipment failures, water events, and other emergencies according to established procedures.
  • Maintain clean, secure, organized, and code-compliant engineering workspaces.
  • Monitor parts, supplies, tools, keys, and equipment needed for effective daily operations.
  • Communicate purchasing and replenishment needs through established approval processes.
  • Promote appropriate inventory use, storage, accountability, and loss prevention.

Job Description

The Lead Engineer is the daily operational leader of the Engineering Department. This position directs the work of the engineering team, coordinates work orders and preventive maintenance, supports the reliable performance of building systems, and ensures repairs are completed safely, promptly, and to Hotel Emma standards.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Must be flexible to work days, evenings, weekends, holidays, and overnight shifts as business needs dictate.
  • Must be available to support after-hours projects, critical repairs, emergency situations, and major operational initiatives.
  • Must be capable of adjusting work schedules to oversee guest-impacting projects, contractor activities, and critical building system work occurring outside normal business hours.
  • Must participate in the department's on-call rotation and respond to operational emergencies when required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, refrigeration, controls, and other building systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems, evaluate alternatives, and make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Ability to organize priorities, direct work assignments, and maintain follow-through across shifts.
  • Ability to train associates and clearly communicate technical and operational expectations.
  • Ability to interact professionally with guests, colleagues, vendors, and leaders.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and maintain legible records.
  • Fluency in English communication required.
