Job summary

Mecklenburg County’s Land Use and Environmental Service Agency (LUESA) seeks a lead inspector to perform the most complex residential and commercial inspections for code compliance, review plans, approve construction documents, and issue permits. The role involves coordinating with architects, engineers, and contractors, and preparing inspection reports.

The position requires advising on code procedures and supporting field teams, while maintaining safety and quality.

Qualifications

• Minimum of three years of inspection experience or five years in a construction trade.
• Associates degree in related field; combination of education and experience accepted.
• Ability to obtain Level III certification in at least one construction trade within one year of hire.
• Requires a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver's License; county driving privileges.

Responsibilities

• Perform the most complex field inspections and enter results, defect codes, and notes on commercial and residential projects to ensure compliance with all applicable codes.
• Issue notices of violations, including stop work orders and follow-ups to ensure issues are addressed.
• Investigate complaints about potential code violations and research inspection history as needed.
• Meet with architects, engineers, contractors, town planners and others during design and construction.
• Prepare and analyze inspection reports, collecting data and writing reports.
• Provide advice on code compliance and related procedures to professionals and the public.
