Job summary

Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust seeks an experienced Advanced Biomedical Scientist (Band 7) to support the Enteric and Infection Prevention and Control service. You will supervise the Microbiology and Virology team, ensure high-quality diagnostic testing, and contribute to service delivery for the Trust and region.

The role requires clinical leadership, robust knowledge of microbiology/virology, and ability to work with clinicians and public health colleagues.

Qualifications

• BSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent qualification.
• Health & Care Professions Council registration.
• Completion of the IBMS Specialist portfolio or equivalent experience at specialist level in Microbiology or Virology.
• Level 7 qualification (MSc, IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma or NSHCS Scientist Training Programme).

Responsibilities

• Supervise and direct Biomedical Scientists and HCSP staff to maintain operational continuity.
• Lead and participate in practical work in the designated section, sharing specialist knowledge.
• Ensure appropriate laboratory diagnostic tests are performed and results validated.
• Interpret laboratory results to meet individual patient needs.
• Support quality assurance and accreditation processes (UKAS, HTA, MHRA, HSE).
• Potential rotation through different sections and out-of-hours rotas as required.
