Job summary

Berkeley Lab is hiring a Beamline Controls Engineer to manage Linux-based beamline control systems, virtualization, storage, and EPICS software. Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field.
• Experience building and running Linux servers, virtualization, storage, and networks in continuous operation environments.
• Strong hands-on Linux systems engineering with security hardening.

Responsibilities

• Install, configure, and maintain Linux servers and virtualization platforms (Proxmox VE) that run beamline control systems and scientific computing.
• Manage configuration, capacity, OS updates, firmware updates, and security fixes across supported machines.
• Build and maintain storage systems, file systems, disk arrays, and high-speed data connections.
• Maintain backup and disaster recovery systems for operational and experimental data.
• Manage network and access controls, DNS, VPN, firewalls, and permissions.
• Automate builds and configuration using scripting and CM tools to ensure recoverability.
• Write, deploy, and support EPICS control software for motors, sensors, and IO on beamlines.
• Develop data acquisition software and operator screens atop the control system.
• Add new instruments to control software and resolve hardware/software integration issues.
• Lead and mentor staff; provide technical direction on major infrastructure decisions.
• Coordinate with beamline groups, vendors, and other DOE labs to implement shared standards.
• Contribute to cost estimates, budgets, schedules, and procurement.
• Ensure compliance with LBNL policies and safety standards.
