Job summary

GEICO is seeking a Lead Backend Software Engineer for its Billing Platform to design, build, and scale critical billing systems. You will influence architecture, drive performance, and mentor teams across multiple billing domains.

The role combines hands-on coding with technical leadership, leveraging Java, Kotlin, or Golang, and modern data/streaming tools in a hybrid work environment across Palo Alto, Dallas, and Chevy Chase.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional software development experience.
• Experience architecting and designing large-scale, complex systems.
• Proficient coding in Java, Kotlin, or Golang; high-performance production code.
• Experience with SQL/NoSQL databases, Kafka, Spark, Airflow or equivalents.
• Cloud-native development with DevOps, observability, telemetry and test automation.
• Collaborates across teams to align technical vision with business goals.

Responsibilities

• Oversee high-level and low-level designs of one or more subsystems in the billing platform.
• Ensure quality, reliability, usability and performance of solutions.
• Provide technical guidance across multiple billing teams and align with platform vision.
• Lead design and development of scalable, maintainable software systems.
• Identify challenges and develop efficient solutions to keep product momentum.
• Mentor engineers and foster continuous learning and improvement.
