Job summary

Collins Aerospace in Cedar Rapids, IA is seeking a Senior Principal Software Engineer to lead architecture and development of core avionics software components, libraries, and tools. You will drive DO-178 certification activities and work with cross-functional teams to deliver certifiable software for safety-critical systems.

This onsite role requires a strong background in C++ and DO-178, with responsibility for artifacts and stakeholder engagement.

Qualifications

• Degree in STEM and 10+ years of experience or an advanced degree with 7+ years of experience.
• Experience designing software architecture for aerospace or safety-critical environments.
• Ability to lead projects, engage customers, and present to senior stakeholders.
• Hands-on DO-178 software development and certification activities.
• Experience with cross-functional engineering teams to deliver complex solutions.

Responsibilities

• Lead architecture and design of core software components, libraries, and tooling for avionics.
• Drive technical direction across development and verification for safety-critical software (DO-178).
• Define and manage software requirements, decomposition, and traceability.
• Develop and verify software using modern C++ and object-oriented design.
• Own DO-178 certification artifacts including DAL-A deliverables.
• Lead certification efforts with customers and regulatory authorities.
• Conduct peer reviews to ensure quality and compliance across the lifecycle.
• Collaborate with engineering, program leadership, and customers to align solutions.
• Willing and able to travel domestically and internationally (<10%).
