Job summary

Speechify is seeking a Team Lead for Android Core Product in Salt Lake City. This hands-on leadership role requires strong Kotlin expertise and ownership of features from design through release, including mentoring juniors and guiding architectural decisions.

The team operates fully remote with a distributed workforce. You'll work closely with Design and Product to deliver reliable, high-quality Android experiences, including performance, UI/UX, and testing strategies, while driving efficient

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands-on.
• Rock solid Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit tests.
• Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work.
• Understanding of tests and how to approach writing them.
• Experience introducing practices that stuck after you left a team.

Responsibilities

• Own major features end to end, from decision to release with design team.
• Own, maintain, and improve reliability metrics for key features.
• Review pull requests and provide constructive feedback.
• Unblock the team and resolve blockers quickly.
• Drive changes so the team uses the best version going forward.
• Keep shared pieces well-ordered and maintainable.
• Lead changes in process when the team is ready.
• Reduce manual intervention for releases.
• Address recurring problems by changing underlying setup.
• Shift verification left with automated checks for nightly QA.
• Plan sprints to focus on decisions still needed.
• Assess review effort needed per area and standard sign-offs.
• Participate in cross-functional discussions early.
• Handle critical issues, releases, and nightly QA builds.
• Mentor early-career engineers and provide learning opportunities.
