Job summary

UCAR seeks a Lead Airborne Systems - Software Engineer IV to lead architecture, real-time data acquisition, and cyber-security for RAF airborne systems. You’ll shape drivers, data pipelines, and onboard visualization while guiding a software team across embedded Linux environments.

Expect collaboration with scientists, flight crews and engineers, travel for field campaigns, irregular hours, and overlap with the retiring incumbent to capture design rationale and create robust documentation and

Qualifications

• Technical vision & leadership to set roadmaps and modernize software
• Real-time data systems with low-latency networking
• Software engineering with C++/Python on Linux, CI/CD and testing
• Embedded Linux development with hardware interfaces
• Strong written and verbal communication across teams

Responsibilities

• Lead the RAF airborne software architecture and real-time data acquisition systems.
• Mentor engineers, enforce modern software engineering practices (CI/CD, automated testing).
• Oversee automated data quality control tools and data products.
• Manage field deployment operations and on-board systems troubleshooting.
• Uphold cybersecurity requirements and secure software practices across platforms.
