POSITION SUMMARY
The Lead Accountant is responsible for performing advanced accounting functions while serving as a key operational resource for the Accounting department. This position supports the Assistant Controller by owning critical accounting processes including payroll and commissions, banking administration, financial reporting, reconciliations, and month-end close activities. The Lead Accountant also provides day-to-day guidance to Staff Accountants, helps coordinate departmental workflows, and identifies opportunities to improve accounting processes as the homebuilding division continues to grow into new markets.
This role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently while collaborating across Accounting, Human Resources, Sales, and Operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Financial Reporting & Month-End Close
- Assist in coordinating the monthly financial close process to ensure timely completion of departmental deadlines.
- Prepare and review recurring journal entries and supporting schedules.
- Prepare monthly and quarterly journal entries on a timely basis.
- Prepare monthly financial statements for review by the Assistant Controller.
- Prepare monthly reporting packages and supporting analyses.
- Prepare balance sheet reconciliations and related journal entries.
- Prepare bank reconciliations.
- Perform balance sheet account analysis and other analytical procedures as needed.
- Prepare backlog and Gross Margin reports on closed homes.
- Prepare weekly cash flow reports for review by the Assistant Controller.
- Identify accounting issues and recommend process improvements.
Payroll & Commissions
- Prepare commission calculations and supporting documentation.
- Prepare commission payroll files and related payroll journal entries.
- Coordinate payroll information with Human Resources and Sales.
- Prepare payroll support schedules and journal entry support.
- Review payroll reports for accuracy and completeness prior to processing.
- Review and approve vendor setup documentation.
- Review W-9 documentation and banking information.
- Coordinate EFT setup, wire requests, Positive Pay, and banking maintenance.
- Maintain general ledger master data, including project setup within the accounting system with approval from the Assistant Controller.
Operational Accounting
- Prepare EMBS reconciliations and sales tax filings.
- Prepare loan draws, ensuring eligible costs are financed through existing loan commitments.
- Prepare recurring reconciliations and supporting schedules.
- Perform ad hoc financial analysis as requested.
- Assist with internal and external audits by preparing requested schedules and supporting documentation.
- Serve as the primary accounting resource for Staff Accountants and Accounts Payable personnel.
- Review Staff Accountant work for completeness and accuracy prior to Senior Accountant or Assistant Controller review.
- Provide training and onboarding support for new accounting team members.
- Cross-train across all accounting functions to provide departmental coverage.
- Serve as backup for Staff Accountant responsibilities, maintaining proficiency in all journal entry types and daily accounting processes.
- Assist with documenting accounting procedures and identifying opportunities for continuous process improvement.
- Collaborate with cross-functional departments to improve accounting efficiency and internal controls.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides functional leadership, training, workflow coordination, and technical guidance to Staff Accountants and Accounts Payable personnel.

EDUCATION
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting and/or finance.
EXPERIENCE
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- Experience with month-end close, financial reporting, payroll, and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Homebuilding, real estate, or construction accounting experience preferred.
- Experience mentoring or leading accounting team members without direct supervisory responsibility is preferred.
